ABC news just told a story of 2 Volt's catching fire.
Chevy declares their cars are safe.
Some of us, here in the RC community have seen
LIPO battery fires.
In Another recent story, with the advent of e-cars,
Fire fighters are being trained to contain such fires.

Along side the apparent safety issues of the elec car,
I also have two other concerns:
1: How long does the Pack last, how much is the R & R?
2: 5/6ths of the USA gets COLD for 4 to 6 months a year,
so how do the owners get HEAT? Dash heat, foot heat,
windshield heat and of course cabin heat?

All this "Convenience" for a car costing over 45,000 dollars!
And maybe every three years will need another Eight Grand
tossed at it!!!

Bottom line: The average working stiff ain't gettin one.

You got money? Go get one.

I love gravity, it always keeps my feet planted when I fly!

After a accident, they should shoot a bullet through the batteries and douse it with salt water. HAHA

We all knew this was going to happen.

Hopefully>>>

the government will do something good for a change and label the volt with a warning label instead of killing Chevy with frivolous lawsuits.

Come on guys remember that this has only happened in 2 cars out of the hundreds that they have sold. What's really going to be interesting is if the volt really takes off and sells millions how many fires they have.

They are not going to sell millions.

People are stupid but not that stupid. For $45K you can have a nice, big Acura that won't catch on fire, will run longer than 6 months and won't make people laugh.

BTW I am all for killing Chevrolet with lawsuits. Go lawyers, kill em.

Chevy has been dead for a long time now and is living off their past reputation.

The Volt has an onboard gasoline generator to supplement additional power requirements if needed and will also produce enough electricity to power the electric motors if the batteries get depleted. One of the salesman at the dealer here was doing a 100km round trip to work and back without the generator coming on and he only charged up when he got home. The drive is through a mountain pass so no flat ground for half the trip. The car is actually a good concept, just way too much money right now.

I work for a company that supplys transformers for the power distribution industry so go ahead and plug in your Volts! We can always build a bunch more coal fired plants to generate the power to charge them! It just won't be a cheap as running gas in your cars!

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about!

Both fires occurred after test crashes, one a week after the crash, the other three weeks after the crash. 6,000 Volts have been sold in 2011 so far.

http://www.mlive.com/auto/index.ssf...ent_just_a.html

I suppose if they had taken the volts out of the Volts after they crashed, there would have been no fires.

As oil based fuels become rarer and more expensive to extract, and battery and electricity generating technology continues to develop, the price of the former will continue to rise and the latter will continue to fall. So it's only a matter of time before electric cars become the more economic option. But I doubt it will reach that stage in any of our lifetimes. At least I hope not.

I would take a big block any day too but unfortunately petroleum companies haven't put money into the refining part of the industry and demand is increasing yet production can't follow demand. The Volt and others like it are meant to ease the demand for this type of fuel, also I think the batteries are actually A123s or litheum ferrite because of their high discharge rate, lithium ion is for camcorders and such.

I was surely joking, no way I could afford to keep fuel in it the way things are. I remember several years ago when I sunk a bunch of money into my Z-28 and ended up getting around 9 miles per gallon when I was done. No way I could do that now. But it sure was fun til I blew it up again..

The problem with electric cars is that they are an even less efficient way to use the fossil fuels that we have now. Since everyone is afraid of nuclear and you can't use hydro anymore We don't have the generating capacity to charge many electric cars with out using coal or other fossil fuels to do it. So in reality electric cars are just a very inefficient way to run cars on coal!

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about!
