Working on updating my X-spec going Fly barless, CCPM (SWM), 3gx, and going with a YS120 my question will the clutch take the extra torque? Updated the autorotation clutch to the high torque version, since guys are using that with the electric version I feel that should be no problem but the engine clutch was designed for a 60/90 so what do you folks think? Also any other upgrades I need?

Are you modifying the existing head, putting the new SSL head on it or doing something else (I don't think RJX or 3DX heads are available any more, but I could be wrong).

Although the 120 is a bigger motor, I think electrics are lots more powerful. Consider that some of the 700 class electric motors are 6kW to 10kW - that's 8 - 13 horsepower! As far as I can tell, other manufacturers aren't doing anything special with their clutches.

Thanks Chris,

Would you believe that aim still flying that Eagle2 I bought from you years ago. Got it out the other day it is one stable majestic old bird. Going with the SSL head, there are several that would work but hey blue looks fine on a Hirobo bird.

If you're going to use the EX auto clutch, then you need to get the E3/D3 variant and E3 mainshaft. It uses 3.5mm screws on the bottom. I'd be uncomfortable with the Freya version that mounts with 3mm screws and the 120. The issue with the screws potentially fracturing is not the peak hp of the motor which an electric easily surpasses. It's the jackhammer effect of an IC engine that comes into play. The larger a single cyclinder engine is, the worse that effect even in the best balanced engines.

The Eagle was and is a great helicopter. Light and beautifully made. I flew my two Eagle 2 EX's for years before finally selling them and getting a Turbulence and a couple of SDX's.

I didn't know you were still in the area - it must be many years since I've seen you. Come on down to the Thunderbirds some time and do some flying with us.

Been around stopped flying toys for a while but back in....my son is flying and looking for other 13 year olds that fly choppers. We will come out to T bird field here soon. When do you guys fly?

Hey Ben what if I redrilled and tapped the stock main shaft to 3.5? I understand I will have to mod the gear also....looks do able.

Doable with the right tooling. The metallurgy especially in the hub is VERY hard. You'll need carbide bits, etc.
