Who said that every shaft you get out the package is 100 percent straight?

Hmm. Might have to get a dial indicator and try this.

Friends don't encourage friends to fly helis! It can cause part shortages.

I can promise, that 99.5% of the main shafts that you buy already have some runout in them. Take a dial indicator and measure a couple of new shafts and you will see what I am saying.

After I straighten a shaft it's as good and USUALLY better than right out of the bag.

Even a cheap Harbor Freight dial indicator is good enough to see the runout. While I wouldn't trust it for making "absolute" measurements, it's ideal for checking if something is not running true. Probably the best $29 I ever spent....

As a beginner, I was astonished to find the main shafts were hollow, and thereby weak. Does anyone sell solid steel shafts?
Yes, the main shaft on my gasser is a solid shaft, but why unnecessarily add weight to the helicopter if you don't need to. A hollow shaft will work just as well as a solid shaft (assuming load is not an issue).

If you crash with a solid shaft, you are just more likely to break something else because there is less "give" in the shaft itself.
