"Is that a Stuart engine on your machine?"

Yes it is a Stuart engine. I machined it about 35 years ago so it's probably older than half the people on RR Back then the complete raw casting kit I think cost $18. And it took about 45 hours to machine.

NiCad,

Yes, that is an SP-2 I picked up a couple of years ago. It runs beautifully.

Weng,

Cool that you are capable of machining a steam engine! I picked up my Stuart used. It needed a bit of work, but not much. Beautiful machines, Stuarts. Very realistic and also very smooth.

That is a drill chuck on the throttle valve. The knob was missing when I got the engine and I needed something when I got to the point of test running it.

It has since been replaced by a Walkera 59D head button, which looks pretty good.

The engine will drive the generator, but the load is such that it runs out of steam very quickly.

The man that taught me to fly planks had one of those little steam engines when I was just starting out in the hobby. I still have fond memories of tinkering with it together.

Did any of you watch American Chopper build off jr vs sr vs Jesse James?

Anyone else think Jrs bike looks similar to this steampunk style?

Steampunk is a retro/mechanical style that doesn't necessarily require steam.
You could make a canopy that is in the style of Jules Vern 20,000 Leagues under the Sea.

That's neat. There's something wrong with your link though. Here's the video.

It would be great if it was efficient enough to actually fly. No more charging lipos or refueling.

LOL electric helis used to have brushed motors which were inefficient (some still do. IDK I've thought about puttin' in a steam engine into a heli before, but I wasn't too sure if it was possible or not. Let alone see it fly.

Saw a video not too long ago about a dude that made a steam powered RC buggy trike. It was pretty stinking cool but steam would never have the power to get a heli off the ground. The RC buggy just kinda chugged along slowly.

So I guess all those steam-propelled "jet packs" and steam rockets powered by hydrogen peroxide were all a myth.

Steam Powered full scale helicopter

Not steampunk, but still propelled by steam.

Anyways, back to the main discussion. Here's a little more on that Stirling Engine: http://raafay-awan.blogspot.co.nz/2...ng-engine.html, It shows three different types of Stirling Engine & how they work. It's worth checkin' out.

Besides the build the next challenge would be teaching a chipmunk or hamster how to shovel the coal for longer flights. If the guy on tv can teach them to row a boat for electricity then teaching either to shovel coal shouldn't be to hard. LOL
