junkpilot rrVeteran Alamogordo N.M. | I'm going to do a new build on a M.A. 46 airframe using an OS-50 Hyper. What pinion and main gear is optimal?

![]() rrElite Veteran Atlanta | The clutch on the 46 was junk. The Hyper 50 will destroy it. You need to retro a 60 clutch. Dr.Ben may have some parts for you. PM him.

TruckRacer rrNovice Des Moines, Iowa | I couldn't agree more about the small clutch used on the 30 / 46 machines. The worst thing about it was the small shaft size. Bearings were hard to retain on the shafts and would wear out quickly. Bergen made an acceptable replacement but I doubt they have been available for years. Retro a larger clutch if at all possible. The old X-Cell 46 was a favorite of mine and I flew one for years (later on with the OS 50) but the clutch drove me nuts at times. I never wore a liner out as they held well but everything else about them failed at one time or another. I finally replaced the stock clutch with a different one composed of parts from various other machines ... problem solved.

![]() rrElite Veteran Atlanta | That's what I did. Ergo 30/40 clutch/bell and homemade fan hub. 6mm shaft. 3 bearing top block. The rubber dampers in the clutch would either wedge in the slot or pop out of the top of the clutch and jam it. The Delrin ring would wear out and produce huge vibration. Real crap. MA liners never need replacing unlike Lynx rubberized liners that melt after 10 flights.

TruckRacer rrNovice Des Moines, Iowa | Its been a few years since I last flew the 46 and I used 9.3:1 back then. With the higher head speeds common today, maybe 9:1 would be more in line. Maybe even 8.45:1? Depends on whether you already have a main gear and / or various pinions to choose from. Sorry I got sidetracked on the clutch thing.
