Hello,

I am new to s-bus. What do I need to get a receiver to work? Do I need a programmer card or computer link of sorts?

You would normally need to tell the receiver which channels to use, yes? How does it work?

Thanks!

No, you do not need a programmer to get the RX to work. How you set things up depends on what RX you have and what you want to do. But all the S-Bus receivers function without anything special. For instance, the R6208/R6108 S-Bus receivers can be used as regular 8 channel receivers.

The only time you would have to do any programming is if you are using the GY-520, GY-701 or CGY-750. Then all the programming is done on the control box for the unit (or radio in case of the GY-520, with this gyro you only need 1 wire instead of two). IF you are using S.Bus in planks, then you would need the decoder when using multiple servos on multiple control surfaces.

You don't need to program the receiver. You need to program the S Bus servos.

If you are using either the R6108SB or R6208SB receiver you can program your S-Bus servos using the RX itself, or you can buy the SBC-1 Channel Setting tool.

If you are NOT using S-Bus servos with either of these receivers, then you need to use the SBD-1 Decoder to allow you to use S-Bus with regular (non-S-bus) servos.

In heli applications, there is really no need to use S.Bus servos. The RX works just like a standard RX, no need to program anything or buy anything additional. IF using a GY-701/CGY-750, then an S.Bus RX must be used (unless using the adapter for non Futaba radio systems) and nothing else is needed. You just have to make the GY/CGY control unit talk on the same channels as the TX (very easy to do on the control box itself in the S.Bus menu).

Sorry, I was not as clear as I wanted to be. my post above was a follow on to using S-bus in airplanes.

@kcordell

Isn't the S-Bus RX or S-Bus adapter required just for CGY-750 and only optional (for some added features) for GY-701 ? The latter works just fine with non-S-BUS receivers, without any need for any SBUS adapter, afaik..

Yes, the GY-701 will work with any standard RX (Futaba or otherwise). But, if you use it with an S.Bus RX, you only need 1 connector as everything (RPM, gain) is controlled by the unit via the S.Bus. There are also a couple of additional features in the GY-701 that are only available if using S.Bus (one is a feature that allows the governor portion along with the gyro to sense potential increases and preadjut for it, not sure if this is the exact terminology, but what it does).
If using for planks, please see the videos on S.BUS on Futaba's website.

The additional S.Bus functionality with the 701 includes switched gov on/off, remote governor gain, and rudder FF mixing. The rudder FF mixing effectively applies an offset in the t/r control to add additional t/r compensation when gyro and t/r demands are at their highest.

Litte factoid: the 18MZ will allow you to program S.Bus servos with needing the programmer and configure any device which normally requires a CIU-2.

I'm using a R6203 with an Align FBL 3GX, so from what I understood from you guys it should be pretty much plug and play, yes?
