Wow didnt realize there was so much involved, but totally understandable, the biggest club im hoping to get involved with in my area has a 90 day probationary period, which im guessing ill learn more about as soon as i hear back from the top guy in charge.. I'd be happy to pay insurance on anything, but im definately not ready or do not want to fly anyone elses property until properly trained and comfortable with it.. Like i said, still learning.. So I plan on learning as much as possible then maybe then i can take on that responsibility, until then i just want to learn as much as possible and work on perfecting my control of these micro heli's.. Most likely ill be flying my own large heli by the time im ready.. Im not in any rush to step up to high above my league if u know what i mean..

Are you saying though to joing an AMA club that insurance is required? Just curious, either way im in :P

To be a member of an AMA chartered club, you must be an AMA member yourself. Being an AMA member GETs you the insurance. Remember that the insurance is secondary, meaning if you have a liability policy already (as in a homeowners, or an umbrella policy), that policy is the primary one. If you don't have liability insurance, or if your primary insurer would for some reason deny a claim, then the AMA insurance would be the one on the hook.

The AMA is more than insurance, go to

http://www.modelaircraft.org

and find out more about them.

No, owning and flying an RC heli or plane isn't difficult, it's actually pretty easy, anyone with the $$$ to do so can. To be responsible, however, is a whole 'nother thread. Accidents ARE rare, especially if you learn how to be a safe flyer and keep yourself aware of the world around you. But should something go wrong, you need some cover for yourself, and those you fly with.

Also, if you're going to eventually attend just about any Fun Fly around, you'll need to be an AMA member to participate. Again, most Fun Flies or Contests are usually sponsored and run by an AMA chartered club.

Man, this thread has taken quite a turn...
