This is just an opinion and not saying it is the case... That connecting rod doesn't look flattened out to me at all. It looks like the lighting is reflecting off the bottom rear edges of the connecting rod from at least two light sources, and that makes it appear to be flattened. But, from a picture like this, I think it is nearly impossible to judge if the bottom of the connecting rod is flattened. Often, connecting rod edges are beveled to relieve stress points (don't know if they are in this case, in dkshema's picture, they are), in which case, they would reflect more light at the right angle. I see light reflecting off various parts of the case that indicate there were several light sources when the picture was made and at similar angles.
