It looks like my three blade conversion on the AS350 is going to lower an already too low rotor disc by about 3/4 inch. I'd like to get that back plus about another 1/4 inch, so the stock Align 201mm shaft needs to grow to about 225mm. Is anyone aware of a source for a longer Align compatible 10mm shaft?

Failing that, I have access to a lathe and could turn my own shaft. I have looked at several on-line sources for 10mm drill rod but it is a bit confusing. The price for a 36 inch rod varies from $7 to $40. Some sites list the tolerances and metallurgy, and others do not. Can someone recommend a suitable rod/source?

Thanks,

Jon

would it not be easier to raise the mechanics so that you can buy a stock shaft whenever you need a replacement?

how are the other guys with the 3 blade head doing it? It just seems a bit drastic that you have to "Build" a shaft to install the head??

My Avant Aurora uses a 10mm shaft. So does my MinAir Stratus. Might be easier to modify an existing shaft than to try and build your own.

If he raises the mechs, the tail boom probably won't line up. I'm using the Century scale mechanics which this fuse was designed around, so no issues with head clearance.

I have a longer shaft for my A119 koala built with rex600 mechs. It's made out of the mainshaft from a Century R22 kit. The century PN is 1076-16. After cutting off the 8mm step down section it's approx .700 longer than the rex shaft. You will need to turn down the one end to 9mm for the drive gear 1 way bearing and put a hole in it for the drive gear bolt. RCA has a longer shaft for the rex mechs, but it's expensive and has been out of stock for quite a while now. They sell it in the huey upgrade kit.

If you buy material to make your own shaft, be sure that it runs true. Drill rod may be too brittle for this application. These shafts are only case hardened, and not hardened all the way through. I believe the rex600 shafts are centerless ground, but could be wrong about that. I'd have to look at the tool marks under magnification to verify it.

Barry is right, raising the mechanics is not an option for reason of tail boom alignment and others.

Jim - I could use the shaft as-is without any flight issues, but the overall mast height and disc would be far lower than scale. The Align FBL head block you saw installed at IRCHA places the disc axis 1-1/2 inches above the Jesus bolt. The new 3 blade head places the disc axis 3/4 inch above the bolt. It is a much shorter head block.

Thanks - I called RC Aerodyne this afternoon and was told that the same shaft will be back in stock in a week. We'll see.

Anyone know if that shaft can be made to work on a raptor .50 titan?

I was comparing the raptor 50 and rex600 mainshafts today and the raptor is shorter than the rex, so you can probably get an even taller mainshaft by using the century R22 shaft. Also, the Hirobo freya/eagle 60-90 size mainshaft is 10mm and longer than the rex600 shaft. Here's a pic of the new shaft for my A119 build.

you need to find a "better" machine shop..? Up to.. 9mm?? Look for a small "Jobber" shop to get it done. should be simple and easy...
