Hello

I recently purchased a balancing board, so then I can parallel charge multiple packs (same c rating, same capacity and cell count) at the same time.

I had some questions:

1. do i connect the main leads first, or the balancing tabs first?
2. if i connect the balancing tabs first, then do i connect the main lead of that battery pack? or do i connect all the balancing tabs of the packs, and then all the leads?

Maybe it doesn't make a difference - but thought i would ask first, just to make sure. look forward to your feedback, cheers ... Khan

as I recall the directions from Progressive, I connect balance lead then main lead for each pack. So one pack at a time, balance lead first, then main connector,

i had a balancing board before, used it for about a month. at that time, i always used to plug the main in first, then the tab. then i would move to the second pack, connect the main lead, and then the balancing tab, and so on

UNTIL, one time, for some reason 'just' when i plugged in the balancing tab .. it shorted, sparked, smoked (balancing tab). one of my pack was already plugged in (both main and balancing tab). i quickly yanked out the packs. it happened so fast that i couldn't tell exactly what happened, i have no idea how the balancing tab shorted. the wires were fried pretty good, so had to replace them. i went ahead and changed the wires as well as the tab. i didn't want to take any chances and threw away the parallel charging board also.

now that i got a new balancing board, i am quite leery ... do not want to repeat the same incident, hence this post.

On the Progressive RC boards the balance plugs face opposite directions (top or bottom) depending on left or right side of the board. I managed to try to plug an xt balance lead in backwards and smoked the connector and the board

Just curious here... I use an Hyperion 615i Duo3 I therefore charge and balance simultaneously (my 12S 5000mAH)... is this not what most people do? I didn't think people ever charged "without balancing", therefore what's the point in a balance board.

I am talking about a parallel charge/balance board. I can charge 6 packs in parallel. So I connect 6 6S 2650 Voltz packs and run one channel of my EOS720 at 20 amps.
For my 4s 2200 and 6s 2600 and 3000 I charge more than one in parallel. For my 6s5000 for my 700e I charge singly on both aides of the EOS.
With a high rate charge and a parallel charge/balance board you cank charge a mess of smaller packs at once.

@jsenicka.... When you are charging all 6 packs at the same time, How long does it take if the batteries are around 40%?

Depends on how much current you can throw at it. If charging at 1C or better for the total capacity, then less than an hour.
So 6x 2650 is 15300mah. If I charge at 20 amps I am doing 1.3C or so? Call it 40 minutes ?

Doing math in my head sitting on airplane for home, so don't expect 100% accuracy.

You simply add up total battery capacity and the go for 1 to 2C of that capacity. With a high rate dual channel charger like my 720 Duo, I can charge a bunch of packs!

revisiting this post again

i have been parallel charging 4 batteries at a time (4 x 4s1p).

something just dawned on me. the way i connect them is: first, i connect all the main wires (+/-), and then all the balancing plugs.

my question is, how will the charger know how many balancing plug i have actually connected? the reason i ask, is because ... if one of the plug is not properly seated, then ... that particular pack will not be balanced.

This is one of the short falls with parallel charging. Your charger will not know the difference.

The other is that all the packs should be pretty close in voltage before you plug them in to parallel charge.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter
