VICTORVILLE - The man suspected of driving the car that struck and killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child last Friday was arrested Thursday by sheriff's deputies.
Deputies believe Brandon Lee McCullough, 37, was the driver of the 2000 Ford F-250 truck in the fatal hit-and-run accident.
Dejuan Rene Smith, 20, was walking north at 10:30 p.m. in the 12000 block of Balsam Road when the truck hit her, coroner's officials said. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Smith was five months pregnant.
McCullough was booked into San Bernardino County Jail on of suspicion of manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death.
During their investigation, deputies developed information that led them to McCullough.
During a news conference Tuesday in San Bernardino, Smith's family made a plea for the truck's driver to surrender.
At the news conference, as Reba Wilson held her 14-month-old granddaughter, Aapple Smith, the now-motherless toddler cried in front of the cameras.
Aapple was thrown from the stroller Smith was pushing when she was hit.
The child is too young to understand that her mother is dead, Wilson said. But she's old enough to know her mother isn't around anymore.
"She knows something is wrong," Wilson said. "Little kids, they know what's going on. She misses her mom."
