I finally got around to taking a couple of pictures. The mechanics are Trex 600E with an Align FBL head and Mikado V-Bar. What a pleasure to fly! In an earlier thread I was seeking help with ground resonance during spool up/down. I moved the mechanics back to pod and boom and the problem persisted. It turned out to be a bad bearing (after five years) in the head block. New bearing = smooth as silk.

Could have fixed that with a 3 blade head Nice looking heli, I have the unpainted version. Haven't decided on a color scheme yet. Your pics make me homesick. I'm from Oak Park Il originally...

Three Bladed Envy...

I'm hoping that Mrs. 2Tall gets the hint and buys me the Century mechanics/3 blade head combo for Christmas this year. I'll even send her a reminder link when the seasonal sales begin. The build and setup would ease the January - March winter glum. Then, I could retire the Align mechanics until someone finally makes a UH1 D or H model suitable for my 600E. I wonder if anyone has tried the 600E mechanics in the smaller of the two Vario Huey D models.

I have the vario #1100 UH1D. There's plenty of room in it for rex600e mechs. You will need the TQ tube drive and the adapter to convert it to cable drive and possibly a taller main shaft.

The Vario #1100 is exactly what I'm looking for. Time for some creative budgeting. Maybe I can convince the CFO to increase the debt limit - or at least to form a committee and explore the options.

When you get started on the Huey a build thread would be great drooling material.

You will need the TQ tube drive...
It's a good thing that I can maintain flight direction better than I can keep threads on point. Anyway - I'm running the Align torque tube in my AS350. Just before the last reassembly I replaced the forward torque tube gear sets. Now I'm noticing what sounds like gear mesh binding during spool down. Strangely, it is brief and occurs exactly once every two full revolutions of the head/auto-rotation gear. Of course the motor pinion and main gear are motionless at spool down and can't be the source. Given the once every two revolutions frequency I have ruled out all the bevel gears. It almost has to be the mesh between the auto-rotation gear and the mating tail drive transmission gear. Once every two revolutions of the larger gear they must Align (no pun intended) at a bind point. There are no adjustments to be made in the mesh arrangement, so replacing one or both would be the only potential cure. Flight performance is normal, but if things don't sound right they probably aren't. Any thoughts?

Added by edit: My initial hope was that the new gears would quiet down after they wore in a bit. They now have about six hours on them and the bind sound has not changed - for better or worse. Has anyone ever lubed these non-metal gears? Using what lube?

If you want to check that the gear runs true, paint some food coloring on one gear face. Let it dry, re-install the tail drive, then run the gears at speed. Take it back apart and look at the wear pattern in the gear. The high spots should show up very well as the stain is rubbed off the gear face. If the wear is even, it's probably a bearing problem that you are hearing. That's my best guess...
