HelicopterEngines Plugs Mufflers Fuel › Covered by OS warranty? Pix and video

I need some advice. This is an OS .37 motor that has less than 15 flights on it. It has been broken in appropriately. While flying today after being down for a while, I thought she was running like a top. Not too lean as evidenced by the piston color. Well, 10 minutes into patterns, the piston shaft lets go and brings me down. Based on what you see, is this a warranty issue, or do I go back to my OS .32? I am running 15% Cool Power Nitro.

Thanks for looking

Greg

No offense, but the engine did not sound happy before the failure. What headspeed? I know you said it wasn't lean, but it sure sounded like it in the video. Also sounds like it was exceeding its bhp rpm...

my humble opinion.

None taken. I understand. I thought about the head speed as well. I have been struggling to bring it down. My highest throttle curve is 90% and pitch is at 100%, but at only 9 degrees of pitch. I thought I was safe, but that is why I posted the video so we can hear the engine.

Thanks

sorry

@ 37 seconds I literally fell on the floor laughing and played it over 10 more times till I could hardly breathe. I am not positive what that bystander said but it's funny either way.

and yes that sounded like a lean run with very little smoke

OS is really good about product support. I would send it in. More than likely you will be satisfied with the result.

I, too, had a hard time understanding him. Nice guy that is interested in flying in the future.

Don't send video with motor , it sounded lean . Run 30% fuel and it will run cooler . OS will probally replace or repair at little or no cost .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

Was that Eddie in the background saying, "oh snappz", right before the high pitched "oooohsh*ttagain" @ 37sec??

That sound kind of lean. Also, are you running a governor?

LOL

At least it was cushioned by the tree.

I thought that was blade smacking asphault. Now that you mention it, I guess it was a tree branch.

Did the motor and one-way bearing lock up? Why did it crash just because the motor quit?

That guy's voice was so funny I'm going to hear it the next time *I* crash. Need to look him up to throw some commentary behind some other heli vids.

It is really funny. I had not really listened to it until now. I emailed OS, so we will see what happens. I did auto just above the tree, but misjudged the distance and ended up in it. Everything is fine except for the spindle, motor , rotor hub and washout guide. The rotor hub cracked and spun right off the vert shaft.

How did you hit that tree?

I bet you couldn't do that again if you tried.

It sounded like too high a head speed.

The resulting broken rod says if all.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

It does look and sound lean. I say look because I don't see any smoke. It doesn't take a very long lean run to blow anything apart. I've seen it before. I hope OS take care of you.

If you lower pitch to hold rpm you release load and motor over revs. Sounds like more power but more heat and noise . When over heat piston cracks or ring when over rpm the rod breaks .

Good info. But I have to ask...Is there any way to bring down headspeed without a governor? I have a throttlemax/revlimiter, but it just never seemed to work.

One thing that will help is getting it tuned correctly. Load will also help, as in more pitch. Those 37s are great motors that can handle alot. Much much better than the 32s IMO. With properly tuned motor, pitch and Throttle curves you should not need a gov to control head speed on that set up. You CAN use one but should not need it. Only problems come in when the head gets unloaded suddenly, then you could see some over speed. Take your time, fiddle with the curves and tuning. Get a gov AFTER you have all that figured out.
BTW it took me about 2.5 trashed motors to learn this stuff.....
