What are your thoughts?

To me, lately (about the past two years) it seems like the popular style among the talented 3D heli pilots is to fly quick fast-moving maneuvers as well as hard. Honestly, I think the old style 3D is allot of fun to watch, and smooth precise 3D is difficult to perform too. For the new pilots they can follow easier and aren't so intimidated, feel safer, and have more hope that they too can do tricks in the sky. But it seems the younger generation craves the fast/jerky over-powered maneuvers filled will testosterone. Just my opinion based on observation. I say lets bring back more slower smoother precise 3D moves. An example is pilot named "Timo" with the TDR heli. Some older fellas (age 30+) can't quite keep up. We need to see these older guys step up and show off too in the name of fun.

I agree, but they will not win competitions, until they can open it up.

Look how Nick has gone from close in Smack to a combo of Smack and huge, fast, big sky stuff.

You have to be able to do both.

A few short years ago there was a transition to pop 'n lock with tight close in manouvers which represented a move away from the CY style big manouvers. I think the new generation is rightly incorporating big manouvers with small and tight smack manouvers in order to provide a broad dynamic envelope.

It's the Sim generation...folks are learning to fly entirely by use of computer simulators. I'm sure you all have noticed the narrow field of view that sims confine you to. If all your maneuvers are learned by looking through a narrow "box", it's easy to see why all the new maneuvers are so tight.

ive been waiting for a post like this, IMO i believe that 3D these days is just fast flips and flips and rolls on weird axis's and random piro's...its gone down the drain really :/ i still find videos from years ago more entertaining than some current 3D videos just because of the pure smoothness. dont get me wrong there are still the pros who proove themselvs in XFC and 3DM but i prefer the "vintage" 3D from a few years ago unless you're 3 inches off the deck doing all the modern day stuff, now thats exciting

I like the slower flowing stuff myself.
I don't watch competition flights at all any more.
It's not all about winning competitions.

I do like Tareqs style. It's different. More like a nail biting edge of your seat holding your breath flight.lol...
His stuff won't win either so he doesn't compete.he just breaks helis in flight.lol...

Aside from his stuff though,I could watch a heli drain a tank doing mobius loops and slow low piro flips.

I literally never use the word literally right.

I love Timos flying. Nice blend of smooth smack and big air. I also enjoy TA's smack flying. After watching smack talks vid on "flying small" and "flying big" in the same flight to show that you can handle the heli in both worlds, I have really started to incorporate those concepts in my own flying. I get bored rather easily as well so the flow from one move into something different is something I personally strive for. Some day's I'm just "not on my game" so tend to resort to more comfortable stuff and am mad at myself at the end of the flight because I forgot to do a move or two.

Edit: Heres a classic Timo vid. He open's it up about half way through and it's amazing at how fast that TDR is!

Nice video, that TDR can move! I too am more of a fan of the slower, big air technical flying than the confined space smack that most new pilots are gravitating towards. There is nothing wrong with that style of flying by any means but I like to move around the sky more. Not that I can do much yet but how many tic tocs type tricks can you watch without getting bored?
And I agree with what was said about Bobby Watts, he IS the man. His night flights are amazing as he is very well rounded. He is my favorite pilot hands down. He did pretty well with his new heli from MA, the whiplash. It looks like it is going to be a real nice heli.

I agree I love old style 3D, throw in a minute of new style 3D and that is great flying. I respect the guys who fly new style 3D but can't watch for hours.
I tell you that I could watch Matt Botos flying for hours that is the style I'd like to be up to right now.

I love flying old school 3D. Unfortunately it doesn't get much attention or compliments as most pilots prefer to watch hard smack. That said, I have a mate who thrashes his helis around & puts on quite the show!

I like Wingman77's flying as shown below;

Some great vids in here!

Sam I half joke half serious, there are three kinds of helicopter flying

1)like a helicopter
2)like a plane
3)like everything else

or

1)hovering, orientation, autos
2)pattern, precision
3) 3d

The state of 3d now is very commercialized, I would say there are two kinds of 3d pilots: buyers and sellers! The moves of the sellers are so beyond the reach of most buyers that balance time is coming for the industry

We all know that pilots who are good at 1) and 2) will be good at 3d
but it does not work the other way around, these are the fundamentals and they need to be emphasized.

I think we will see more old school 3d, also more smack and even f3c/f3n moves because it is all fun and the industry shot itself in the foot with "smack" and pandering to the 15-25 yr olds and their parents money.

30-50 yr old "old people" are taking it back! Half of us were smack age not long ago, but for the rest of you now watch us take ten minutes to do a lefthand circuit you little ****s hehe

Hey I started in helis at 14 and am now older so bring it!

I have the IRCHA 2005 DVD and this flight is what got me interested in low down smack style flying. Note the piro flipping auto, you don't see auto's like that anymore:

Right on, I *love* the TDR videos Timo puts out. They flying style is smooth and controlled, and the heli sound is just awesome. In pursuing slower precision 3D maneuvers I've found it's actually a bit more difficult. Fast/wild 3D you can get away with an oops here and there since it is so jerky to begin with. For me I'm really enjoying 1900RPM on my 90 electric FBL heli. It's smooth, but it isn't slow by any means.

What happened to the Death Spiral? One of the coolest moves in all of heli 3D and nobody does it anymore!!! I think peeps are scared of it.
I mean, I never see it in any 3D flying.
