I just procure a second D3 and I am thinking about converting to FBL though I have not yet decided. I previously converted my SDX from FB to FBL and find that either way, my FB D3 outperforms both of them (probably apple to orange comparison though). I think the SSZ-IV head is very good for 3D and maybe one of the best FB head in today's market. So the question is how much more gain will there be to ditch the SSZ-IV and convert the head to FBL for an extra $600? Is the gain significant?

fbl doesn't stop at the head
there's the fbl unit to cost into it also

i would only go fbl on a d3 if it came in the kit
and not as an extra

I'm actually in the process of building my second D3 as FBL. I had a second kit at home collecting dust. Bought it for spares originally. I bought the new head and putting a CGY750 on board.

Went with FBL because I wanted to see how much difference it would make. So it is a very different heli in some ways. Will always have the FB D3 though. Recently I found out I was flying with a bent blade grip arm and still flew awesome.

I have only just starting assembling the frames after spending nearly 2 weeks sealing all the edges with CA first. Should be a quick build as the head is already pre-assembled from factory. Will post some pics once i'm done.

I converted my SDX from FB to FBL as a test. It felt different but I didn't like it more than the original FB head. Therefore my Turbulence will remains FB but I will change the engine from YS91 to YS120 instead.

Bugcatcher,

Please report back how you feel about the FB and FBL after you are done.

I converted my D3 EX to FBL, and would not look back.

Like Bugcatcher, Im using the Futaba 750, feels very natural like a flybar.

The heli is now faster in every way, but has not lost the super smooth locked feeling that the SZ4 head had.

More energy left in auto's, tick tocks faster, less corrections in high wind conditions, looks much much better, less repairs needed when it goes in too.

I was told it was sacrilige when I converted, but I do not regret it for a second

I've seen Aarons D3 in person and it has lots of power.

To be honest i'm expecting the FBL D3 to be very different heli to fly. Partly from the FBL head and CGY750 but also from the servo's as i'm going to run a full Futaba BLS HV setup so going from Hitec's with a speed of 0.14 to BLS255HV at 0.08 there's always going to be a bit of difference.

At the moment my SDX is alot faster than my D3 but the D3 is alot more precise. With the new D3 FBL, I expect I will get both.

Is this the only part needed to convert the head to FBL?

Mechanically yes.
You will also need to buy either a Mikado Vbar or a Futaba CGY750 gyro system.

Take a good look at the Helicommand Extreme or SX FBL controllers.

Enjoy things that money can buy IF you don't lose the things money can't buy.

Are there any DIY solutions to convert D3 to FBL using stock parts etc.?

I can´t afford to buy that fbl head now, but I have one CGY750 sitting in a box.

Of course.

Use Mikado locking washout base and arms, its a direct fit.

I use Mikado 85mm link rods, and Logo 600 ball links.
Feels a bit stronger than the stock Hirobo links and ball link ends.

I think the balls I used on the grips, are the ones from the seesaw on the D3.

You need the balls on the servo horns to be 12mm out from center.

Job done.

I had a very low RPM tip over on concrete (my fault), and twisted the head block.
So Im looking forward to fitting the correct FBL Hirobo head as soon as mine arrives
