well, first i did the stretch to 350's on 3S 40C's and had more instantaneous pop, but lost the grunt to pull through maneuvers. I had to be very careful on combination collective cyclic movements, or even long collective movements. I then decided to go to 6s. I purchased the 6s mini motor (1300kv) as well as blue lipo 6s 1300 30C lipos.http://www.hobbypartz.com/83p-1300mah-6s1p-222-30c.html
after some break in, i'm pretty impressed. I'm running the stock (16t) pinion right now, and running at 3000 rpm doing big air and medium to hard 3d. I'm using a castle ice 50 lite, set rpm at 3000, pwm at 8khz, timing low. pretty efficient, motor doesn't get anywhere near as hot as on 3s, but probably still about 150F which doesn't worry me (used to get close to 200F on 3s, affecting power delivery as the temp went up) I'm running into 100 percent power output quite often when i data log, so i'll probably hop up a tooth and try that out. I also did some research and found that 12khz and medium timing may improve power and thus lower power output so 16t may be fine at 3000 then. I'll try to post results.
Overall i'm quite pleased, power isn't phenomenally better, but the heli has much more grunt. I used to bog nearly 600 rpm on hard movements on 3s, now its down to about 200-250, so it feels much better. This will probably improve with a 17t @ 3000 as when i was running 3s i wasn't so high in "power output" on the castle so often. I still cannot coax out full stick fast tic-tocs like my logo 600, but power is much better and the heli feels more "confident" in the air.
I'm sure by upping the headspeed another 300-500 rpm, it will be a real beast, but i'm quite happy at 3000-3100, just need to pinion up a bit for a little more gov overhead. I honestly would recommend this to those folks running at lower headspeed, as the higher voltage seems to maintain rpm much better, especially at lower headspeeds. I'm sure it would also work well for the uber rpm stickbangers as well, but counter intuitively its quite nice for lower rpms as it really increases the low rpm grunt that was missing on 3s, especially in those "oh crap panic slam the collective and cyclic and get out of there" moments.
flight times with the 6s 1300 pack at 3000 rpm are 5 minutes taking 80% out, and that's relatively hard flying. I'd wager at 2700 rpm (chris's favorite) and doing more aerobatic and smooth 3d you could squeeze out 6 or even 7 minutes.
oh, also wanted to mention that the power fade felt on 3s after about 2-3 minutes into the flight is gone. feels the same minute 1 as minute 5, which is also very nice.
Overall i'd have to recommend the 6s upgrade.
