I want to use the 8Fg for RC cars.
Can I use FASST surface receivers with 8FG? Are they compatible?
I know I couldn't bind to the Spektrum surface receivers with a DX7. I'm hoping FASST might be different.

No, you cannot use either the FASST surface receivers or any of the FHSS receivers with the 8FG. The chart at the bottom of this page shows what works with what;

http://www.futaba-rc.com/accessories/modules.html

But you can install any of the compatible FASST receivers for your 8FG in a car or boat since there are no restrictions as in the past. The R6106HFC would be a great car RX. Plenty of range and small as can be. In fact, it is smaller than any of the current "surface" FASST receivers.

Is that just what the chart says or did you actually test it to confirm this?

You'd think FASST is FASST, right? It's not like we're mixing protocols here.

If it really won't work then I suppose I could just put a park flyer rx in the car.

First, the chart information is absolutely accurate. But yes, I have confirmed it. I also race boats and cannot get any of the 3 or 4 channel receivers I use with my 3PM and 4PK radios to work with my 14MZ (TM-14module) or 6EX FASST radios. Conversely, the "aircraft" receivers do not recognize the signal from the 3PM or 4PK transmitters.

The 6106HFC is smaller, lighter and less expensive than any of the 603 or 604/614 receivers.

The reason is while still both being FASST signals the way the channel data is encoded is sufficiently different that two will not work with each other.

Thanks for the info.
It really is a wonder why they're not compatible. It's the exact same thing with Spektrum. I had a car a few years ago that I used with an AR6100 park flyer rx with my 9303.

I for one like stick radios. They feel better to me than pistol grip transmitters.

The way it was explained to me was that Futaba came out with their FASST surface radios first. They established a certain order of the data stream for how the channel info was sent using the FASST protocol. As they developed the air radios they decided to change that method and adopted a slightly different protocol for the air radios. But they did not want to make the surface radios obsolete by changing them too. So they stuck with what they had for the surface radios and continued on with the air radios.

But like I said, the 6106 HFC is smaller, lighter and cheaper than the normal "surface" receivers, so what's not to like??
