If you're all about gasoline powered helicopters, stop by the Jamboree seminar tent on Saturday Aug 13th at 4PM

We will have a live discussion about some of the topics covered on my forum

I'll publish more of an agenda as the time gets closer, but the general theme will be about why now is the best time to try/fly a gasoline powered helicopter since they started making them.

So grab your glow power buddies and bring'em over

Look for "Gas Powered Thoughts" on the seminar agenda.

IRCHA Live Seminar

Carey,
The seminar was great. Thank you. I'm interested in the Whiplash, but certainly hope someone will take the guess work out of the power train decisions. Converting from nitro to gas will be much easier if someone with expertise suggests the ideal combination. It will be even better if it comes packaged up from a retailer.
Thanks again,
Jack

Thanks Jack, glad you found it useful. For anyone interested, I've attached the discussion outline here:

Yesterday was the first day I was able to fly the actual model, its still in prototype form however as soon as I'm able to spend time with it in a more final form and actually run various setups I'll post up some "packages" along with some video.

Seeing that whiplash at Ircha was awsome! I sold my preddi and I am getting a whiplash!

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Carey Shurley: Whiplash Eng Orientation ???

Carey-

I've not seen any comment on this, but can the RC engine (right designation?) be oriented with the head forward to get the fuel tank in the rear?

If so, would you discourage this for RF interference (RFI) reasons up front with all the electronic brains?

By now I guess you have flown it. What do you think of the flight characteristics?

Thanks

I was able to fly the model at the Jamboree, I think its gonna be a hit! Its been designed to support the engines and head speeds that really liven it up.

the engine position is going to be fixed, facing backwards. Facing it forward was going to cause issues with spark plug access because of the frame design

AFAIK, the Spectra will remain as the only model that you have a choice of engine direction. Once upon a time running electronics close to the ignition system could cause problems but the 2.4ghz systems do very well with it. You can still get into trouble running servo wires too close to the high voltage lead but thats about it. I actually encourage running the motor forward on the spectra because it gives the model a more balanced look and literally a better CG for sport flying and aerobatics.

is this good question for seminar?

I'm in process of evaluating the gas convert kits for my Trex600N and notice that most zenoah motors are magneto based ingnition.
I know they work and are reliable but looks old fashion to me and the electronic ingnition can improve easy start and adaptive ingnition curve improving overhall engine performance.

found some zenoahs low cc with electronic ingnition from factory but they are really power ungry!

is the Rcexl ingnitiom convertion kit way to go?
someone who did this convertion care to share the experience.

yeah the RCExL units are far more efficient. If you search around the difference in current draw between the std zenoah cdi and this is documented.

now, almost all of the conversions remove the magneto flywheel and replace it with a small lightweight aluminum wheel with a trigger magnet in it.

so by removing flywheel weight, the engine can theoretically accelerate more quickly.............but it can also decelerate more quickly as well

I'd rather see the variable curve EI system combined with the heavier flywheels. Of course like most things related to gas powered helicopters there are a multitude of opinions about this.
