I'm consistently charging two packs at a time at around 18 amps per channel ... But I can't run SYNC mode as when it takes a break and then starts pulling again it trips the generator and it cuts power for a few seconds resetting everything. Doesn't do this if the "breaks" are offset by charging in SOLO mode.
I tried to tell you guys on page one. You can't run those power supplies at full tilt with a Honda or Yamaha 2000 watt genny.

if you round the corners of the bit just a little bit it helps alot with the acrylic.

another reason to use lexan it drills easy and won't break. and i mean its like almost impossible to break.

Who cares... its just money...

It works fine in SOLO mode, it's just SYNC mode that trips it up.

What's interesting is that I just figured out that a single one of these will push 20 amps per channel no problem (forgot to plug one in). They are rated for 960 watts so I'm sure I'm above 80%, but this is with grid power, going to try with the generator shortly once I get my morning coffee in and emails read.

Ok, here's the scoop ... No point in running two Mean Well RSP-1000-24 power supplies with this charger and generator combo as one will still out pace the Honda EU2000.

Max charge rate per channel on the generator is 18 amps (36 continuous) because the quick voltage check stops and starts trip the generator and resets the charger.

The generator can push the 40 amps no problem, it's the stops and starts that trip it. If one were so inclined a deep cycle battery in between would solve this but I'm not going through all of that to shave basically 2 minutes off of my charge times.

On grid power you can ramp it up to 20 amps per channel with no problems and use SYNC mode and still a single Mean Well RSP-1000-24 will do it.

The only reason to run two Mean Well RSP-1000-24's in this configuration is to basically just not to stress them out, but frankly for how short a period we run them continuous full output I doubt it would shorten the life significantly.

So, fun project, but ultimately a waste of $315 for the second power supply with the Hyperion 720 Duo.

Also, the Mean Well RSP-1000-24 is known to be really efficient so your mileage may vary with other power supplies.

Comments?

I think if we run our 2000's in parallel it will allow for the full 20 amps.

True dat, it should divide that restart load in half.

Thanks for sharing all the detailed, real world feedback.

One aspect does surprises me though, so just to confirm: you can charge a 6S at 20A on each side (40A charge total) using one RSP-1000-24?

The math says this would require at min. 1008W at full tilt (25.2V x 40A) and in reality more since the charger is around 90% efficient at this operating range (with 24V input), so one would expect 1120W min. required (1008W/.9). In my experience, at >10% over rated output some 1000W units may handle this in some atmospheric conditions for a short period of time, but few can cope with this reliably for long.

Considering a more typical 80% efficiency factor, at 18A on each side (36A total) for 6S the total requirement would 1134W. It's generally not recommended to run power supplies like rental cars, most recommend 20% overhead on top of efficiency allowances, although as always your mileage may vary .

Cheers,
David

It will definitely do 20 amps per channel simultaneously, it's even a little over. I have mine set to 26.4v, the RSP-1000-24 has a little pot to let you select up to that voltage.

It was screaming, LOL!

Ok, turns out just turning the generator's eco mode off lets me run at full 20 amps per channel without the generator tripping during the charger's voltage check, just an fyi if anyone is interested. (thanks Carl)

Rock on! Glad we could help.

Great to see everyone out at IRCHA - lots of nice case set-ups there.

Thanks also to the folks who let us borrow some generator power to get things done (Rodney/Benjamin).

This is my PL8 setup using dual 1.3KW IBM server power supplies (so I have 2.6KW of juice in there, charger is rated at half than that).

Folds into this (the ProgressiveRC sticker can be seen on the table):

This what makes big electric helis possible for me, otherwise I'd go nuts with the small chargers, cabling and waiting for packs. It rocks.

Nice work Samur - clean and powerful!

bkervaski - we were there the whole time! In main vendor tent West right behind KBDD and TSA, we had the back row of the main tent with SpyderBatteries. Crazy storm that rolled in Saturday night actually took our tent out (with me in it ). 'Til next year!

Cheers,
David

changeable ramp feature
hey guys i have experienced this as well on this generator i have a question? what about a setting that would change how fast the ramp of current comes back so it' doesn't stall the generator i have notice this problem on long extension cords and just a 2c charge rate

I did my 1000W for $10 with two Dell 2650 PS.

Can't do better than that.

It's easy to find an excuse to do wrong. Hard is not to find an excuse to do right.

Awesome. Thanks again sir. Happy flying out in B'more and can't wait until next year. The only complaint I ever have with IRCHA is there's simply not enough time to slow down and just take it all in.

Cheers,
David
