video camera mounted on head hub watching main blade - aelous 50 first test

Not sure if someone else has already done this but I've been wanting to forever. I mounted an 808 keychain camera on my 450 and then my Aelous 50 cf. These were just shakedown flights but the camera showed no signs of detachment attempts, so next time I go to the field I'm going to leave it on for a couple of flights.

Interesting perspective... the vibration you'll see is present on both helis. I didn't post the 450 video but this is the Aelous one. Nothing fancy here just a quick hop into idle-1 and a bit of pitch pumping and climbouts. Description on the video has more info.

Careful with your volume setting!

That was different, I think I got dizzy. How did you mount the camera?

You have GOT to do a blade stop auto with that set up. Very cool

The setup is just about as simple as it can get. A couple of pieces of "permanent" double sided tape (I used some white tape from Scotch but it doesn't compare to the grey 3M stuff IMHO) on top of the head button and the 808 camera sticks on top of that. I cleaned both with rubbing alcohol first. On the nitro I wouldn't trust it more than one flight without changing this tape. With 3M tape I probably wouldn't hesistate to leave it on the whole day. That said, when I took it off tonight it 'tore' the tape so there was a good hold achieved. With the surface area of a trex 450 head button, I was able to pick the 450 heli RTF up by the camera and swing it around without problem.

NOTICE! Anyone doing this, keep the heli away from yourself just in case it decides to bat the camera in your direction!

What I really want to do is have the CCD module mounted at the blade tip looking back towards the hub. The entire camera is 15 grams but the CCD module itself is about the size of one of the buttons. If only there was an easy way to extend that micro ribbon cable!

A second consideration would be to mount it to the blade just outside of the root, with a counterweight on the opposing blade. The camera would then face the hub and hopefully be positioned to see the other blade in certain conditions. Someone will do it soon enough I'm sure!

With this setup at least I'll be able to document what kind of flex the blade sees in something like a tail slide with a fast pullout. So far with just some collective pitch inputs it appears to me the tip moves about two inches between positive and negative extremes.

Excellent video. I'd not have thought there was a chance of bringing the camera home from that ride!
