Time for an update

Well...just when you thought it was safe...oops...wrong story line...

I thought you EC-145 fans would like an update. I have been hard at work with the scale details...man and there are a bunch.

The upper dog house pieces are pretty much done and need sanding. I have lately been focused on the tail area and details. Since no one makes the tail light fixture I have scratched one out of blue foam and abs sheet. The panel details are differing abs sheet thickness for simulation.

The other scratch pieces centered around making the oxygen tank covers. Essentially this is laminated blue foam that I glassed with 2 0z glass and Zpoxy. When that had set I used Zpoxy and Micro balloons. Filler primer and sand did the rest of it. They turned out good.

Here is a shot of some CineScale stuff I am using and modifing...Having a ball with the details but I need to wrap all of that up, sand, sand some more and then prime.

From there it is panel lines and rivets...

Oh, and my good friend Stan(Doorman) and Darrell Sprayberry along with Santa Claus, hooked me up with a new motor for the EC. It is a 5035-310 with an 8mm shaft...awesome.

I'm collecting parts for a Vario EC145 I picked up from Joe at ECV in november. It's going to be extreme mechanics with electric conversion. Gotta know where you got a Castle 5035 310kv. I've never seen one, and google search doesn't turn it up either?? My plans are to use a scorpion 4035 400kv, but I like to keep the options open. Is that a new motor? Also interested in power and amp draw vs. the 4035 400kv. Keep the thread going!!

Adam,
Castle is not making the motor any longer and I was lucky enough to get one. I will sell you my Hyperion that I was going to use for $100. It is the 4035-400 and works beautifully.

It is posted here;

Looking Really Good!!

Paul you are going to have an outstanding heli for the the NATS this year...and I have to say that CC motor sure does look ”comfy" in there...
I would check but I am pretty sure the kv is 390...
Also, later this season there will be another company that will be making this motor..I don't have much info yet, but will let you know as I hear more about them..

rckfish, Thanks for the info on the motor. I actually bought a scorpion 4035 400 8mm a few weeks ago, but I'm always looking for what's going to work best. The scorpion looks awful small when I hold it up to the EC145 fuselage! I've got a Hyperion 4035 560 running 12s in my 17 pound seahawk at most pulling 20 amps, I'd be ecstatic if I get even close to that.
Thanks, Adam

Yep, I understand Adam. I flew the Hyperion in the EC145, 4 blade head, etc. on 12S with no problems. They Castle is just giving me a little more head room for all the details, etc.

Ok guys, got a question thats driving me crazy. Just found out the extreme mechanics I was looking at are backordered, and the more research I do, I find that for electric setup in the vario EC145, it's probably easier to use the petrol mechanics or vario electric mechanics. I've got a scorpion 4035 400kv (8mm) and would like to use it. How are you guys getting 1200-1300 headspeeds with that kv rating on 12s. The petrol mechanics all list as 9:1 ratios at best with the clutch setup or stock gearing. I'm calculating headspeeds of
over 1500 at 90% efficiency and at 85% of the esc range. I'm guessing closer to 70% on the esc to drop it in acceptable head speed range and we all know how CC esc's don't like that. I need some advice from the experts!! I don't have a problem modifying the mounting setup for either. What am I missing?
Thanks, Adam

I'm using an xera 300kv motor, Jive80HV governed on 12S in my benzin mechs. It works out to 1320 RPM headspeed before governing the esc. I think it was Chris who told me that there may be other driven ratio pulleys from the R22 kit that will work in the benzin, but I may be wrong. It would be worth a call to Joe Howard for advice.

Head Speed?

Adam, your calculations sound right on...
With that said, I have been flying my Jet Ranger at a 1250 hs on benzin mechanics, with 9:1 gear ratio for all last season...this is with a 2 blade fbl head.
I am running a straight line on the esc (CC-80hv) at 75% on 12s. I use the gov mode though and it does not get into the red zone at all during set up...
This is a bit lower then l would normally run, but the entire system, motor, esc, and batteries do not show hardly any heat...maybe +10 to 20 degrees..
The Jet Ranger weighs in at 18 pounds rtf..
I will let Paul give you the info on his with the 4 blade head, but if I recall correctly, he is at about 80-85%
If it were available, I would have gone for a 300 to 350kv motor so I could run a higher setting on the esc, but I have no problems on the 75%... I also have the same set up in my Hughes 500....but have not been able to test fly it with the 5 blade head yet...
Hope this confirms your findings...Stan

Adam,
Like Stan says I am running 1250 hs at 80% in governor mode.

I like the benzene set up so much, I want another!

The end of the story...

I finished my EC-145 on Friday, June 22 in terms of having it ready to compete in the NATs this year at Muncie, details, etc., etc.

Yesterday, I flew it at the CAMMA fun fly and airshow and lost the tail, going into uncontrollable pirouettes. I will spare you the details and photos but needless to say it was totalled....

Over a year of work gone...the saddest part is it is gone 6 weeks before the NATS. I still want to compete but need a miracle to find a bird I can get ready with documentation, etc.

I will stop whining now and focus on the next project. Thanks for listening.

Man that is horrible. It really sucks having put that much work into a project and not even have time to enjoy it. It was a beautiful machine and it will be missed.

I don't always fly helis, but when I do I prefer to fly scale.
