I was wondering how most of us got into this addictive hobby. Did you decide to get in cheap with one of the many clone heli's or did you jump in feet first with a high dollar machine. As for me, my gateway drug into this hobby was a Blade CX2 (flew away), another CX2, Blade 400 RTF, Blade CX3, Halimax CP3, Novus CP, Hausler 450 SE V2, and Align 100.
The reason I ask is due to the amount of clone joke's / don't buy comments I often see. A lot of new heli pilots get frustrated and give up due to numerouse crashes and money spent in repairs. Heck, most of the crashes occur just trying to learn to hover in all orientations. Why spend big bucks to learn to fly when you can learn for less.
Then again, if you have money to blow! Why not spend it on a nice heli There is a lot of worse things we could be doing with our money. At least, that's what I tell the wife. LOL!

So who started cheap and who went Big Spender?

I am starting with an EXI 500 kit that is slowly but surely turning into an ALIGN! A member of the local club set me up with alot of super cheap parts which has been an experience in itself. I'm learning it's better to buy quality parts, especially electronics and bits that have to move in an extremely quick and controlled manner e.g. the tail rotor.

I started on a Hirobo Sceadu 50 in about 1999/2000 - right when it first came out. My next was a Freya 80, then an X-Spec 90, and a Vibe 50. Somewhere along the way I made a mistake and bought a SLET Align 450 . . . . it almost never flies . . . .

Top dollar? Definitely not, but then again far from a cheap POS either . . .

I started out 2 years ago with RealFlight G3.5, then bought a Blade CX2 off eBay... 3 fp's since and my first cp (regrettably due to Ace going under and high cost parts), was a Thunder Tiger Innovator EXP. I just bought a clone (Gootch 450SE V2) for about $200 less than my Innovator EXP... we all make mistakes somehwhere down the line. Thankfully I won't have that problem with the Gootch's direct Align cloneability and their own quality parts that some say are even better than Align (surprisingly enough!). Btw... my fp mistake was buying a Heli-Max Novus CX... hated the blade grip pins!

I think if you have to start with a clone, this hobby is going to get way to expensive. I started off with a nice 50 size machine.

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

I started with a blade CX2 then on to a CP pro and a T-Rex 450 after that. It's been more expensive after that. It's worth it though.
