Im all new to Logos, does the pinion require any backlash against the main gear? Im thinking not because of the herringbone gear but need professional advice.

No lash

Run it snug...you can tri flow the gear if you feel the pinion getting really hot to the touch..if that doesn't help..then back it off slightly..

You want a very tiny bit of backlash. Make sure the pinion is aligned vertically perfectly. Check out Finless bobs vid on this with his Logo 500 build videos.

I set my Logo 600se up with No backlash at the high spot on the main gear, When you hand spin the main gear, and are not on the high spot of the main gear you will feel very little backlash.

Lash

Ask the Expert MrMel and he will tell you the same..pretty much no lash is best..

silicone lube the gear to lower the pinion temps but almost zero lash is how I run ALL of my logos..and I haven't had a gear strip in a VERY long time ..I fly relatively hard as well..and had great luck with MrMels recommendation of no lash...

Despite what some people think...Finless doesn't know everything about every heli

I fail to be a blind follower of his..

There is a difference though to adjust so that there is no backlash and pushing the pinion hard up against the main gear.

By finding the high spot on the gears and adjusting to just leave a hair of backlash ensures the least amount of friction.

Years ago when I had my first electric car I adjusted the gear mesh so there was no backlash. The friction was so high the motor wouldn't turn.

Achieving the exact perfect amount of backlash with herringbone gears, and the perfect belt tension with Logos is a "black art"

The problem with saying "no lash" with no qualifications, is that guys then push the pinion against the gear, and ending-up with some actual "pressure" between the pinion and gear. That of course causes problems as well.

So...no lash, but NO "pressure" between the two either. But since the gears are rarely perfectly round, you'll never get a consistent lash all the way around. So you'll end-up with a slight amount of lash at some points, and no lash at others spots.

By far from our experiences with guys having gear problems, is from the pinion not being perfectly vertically aligned with the gear, and the gears being too tight making them get too hot (allowing a strip to develop). We avoid getting "pressure" between the two at any point, at the expense of having some lash other places on the gear.

So as guys try to describe it, you'll hear "no lash", and, "a small amount of lash" both. And, both are right...sort of

Hope this helps,

Dave

Dave, I assume you set the lash at the high spot on the main gear?

From my above post: "So you'll end-up with a slight amount of lash at some points, and no lash at others spots."

The "...other spots" stated above, would be the high spot.
