Does anyone use a 3S 11.1 lipo to power a toolbox for glow igniter and electric fuel pump as opposed to the lead acid battery? Is that good?

I did. All last summer. Worked fine. I have a normal battery now but the lipos worked fine. I think I had 2 1800 mAh packs.

Reason I used the lipos was my lawn mower battery went bad so I robbed the one out of my flight box.

Once my 3s lipos are too tired for my Trex450, they go into my powerpanel box. I have one 4s battery to power my starter, and a 3s to power the glowplug and fuel pump. One good 3s would be sufficient up to a 50 size heli. I found if the 3s wasn't fully charged or I needed to start my Fury Extreme's C-Spec, it didn't have enough juice to turn the motor over and keep the glow plug hot enough to start.( voltage drop from the load was too high ) That's when I went to the 2 battery system instead. I have a 3s feeding the powerpanel, and a 4s going to a separate set of banana plug ports on the side that the starter plugs in to.

(Note: the 3s balance port is out the front. The 4s is actually two old 2s packs that I used to use as flight packs in my Vibe...that's why there are the dual balance leads)

I usually charge it once a month and it's fine. A LOT lighter than the 12V lead acid I used to drag around in my flightbox.

Hey....it works. It uses batteries that I'd otherwise destroy and they are always in a fireproof box ! (yes...an old PC parallel port switch box.....from the eighties)

The powerpanel is from my planker days.( yes - also from the eighties ) But, I always say, if it works, don't f**k with it !

Would this panel be ok to use with a 5s lipo? For a DynaTron starter.

Mine fall down, went BOOM!!

No. Well, the panel could probably take it, you might be able to dial down the glow driver enough, but if you use a fuel pump, you would cook that. You might fry the remote glow charger port as well?
If you did what I did and have a 3s lipo driving the panel, and a separate lipo 4s or 5s driving the extra port on the side of the box that isn't connected to the panel, that would work fine. Another benefit of having a separate battery driving the starter is that when you really load it (like starting a .90), the glow voltage doesn't sag.

My power panel, Slimline pump, and Dynatron have all worked well for years on 4s lipos.

I figured I could use the 5S just for the starter and a 3 or 4 for everything else. Thanks for the info guys.
