I'm building my electric aurora and I'm thinking about using a CC Bec pro to power my electronics. Has anyone used one with success on 12 cells in this Heli

Stay away from the CC BEC, Go with the WR Super BEC. Unlike the CC BEC, It will not fail

I'm using a Bec pro in a trex 600 and so far so good. The other option I have is a 6 volt nimh pack with a step-down for the tail. I don't want to run a lithium reciever pack for my own reasons

according to castle the pro bec v2 units should be fine operating at 12s voltage. personally it seems to me with RC electronics the higher the voltage the more unstable the electronics seem to behave resulting in more fires on high voltage setups. more power = more heat = fire melt downs etc. makes sense right?

now personally i have used a pro bec run from a separate 2s lipo and it worked great on my 600E currently i run straight LiFe 2s on my 600 and 700 and the pro bec is now in my 30% yak 54.

In your case if you want to save some bucks and have a very reliable system with a castle bec pro i would recommend running the pro bec from only one of the two 6s flight packs which will do two things for you, first and most obvious is you will then only be reducing the voltage from ~22.2-25 down to 6v rather than all the way from ~44.4-50 down to 6v.

the other benefit of this type of configuration is you will be able to plug in one of the flight packs and have the RX come on your FBL controller (if you choose that route) will be able to initialize and you will be able to do a full flight check and do any setup to the heli without the danger of hitting a wrong switch or bumping the throttle stick and having an accidental spool up.

so you will have the wonderful safety of a separately power-able control system from the flight power system while at the same time still saving weight and keeping the "BEC" doing what it was originally intended to do by eliminating a battery.

if you are worried about un evenly discharging your flight packs worry not! (at least not too hard). You can always alternate which pack you are using to power the control system, but regardless of alternating packs so long as you are not already in a habit of abusing your batteries and balance your cells often the difference is very highly negligible. 4 servo's and a few LED's down draw a whole lot of power in 5 minutes.

sorry to ramble! just wanting to help.

Who cares... its just money...

I would go Super bec if hooking it up to 12s but if you run it off of one 6s then the Super mini bec should work good.

I think a 90 would be too much for the 5s bec in the pic. But I'm not a big elec guy so someone with more experiance would have to confirm. But just from what I've read and have been told the 5amp one would be small for it.

I don't crash... I land with style

I have run that Western Robotics BEC on my MinAir machine with 3x JR 8717 servos and never had a problem with it. For what its worth, the WR BEC seen in that photograph is the older model. The new one is much smaller and has a couple of extra power leads. I believe the rating on that BEC is 5A continuous at 6V and something like 15 or 20 amps peak.

Hi,

thanks for everybody's feed back..

I would probably feel more comfortable running a rx Pack.. On the compromise on weight I suppose..

still struggling with this idea of running bec on one of the main pack..

CC BEC's and ESC's

I have used the CC BEC on my Trex 550 E FBL and have 50+ flights with no problems. When and how do these fail? I also have the CC BEC on my new Avant E. This is a 12S set up and I have 6 flights plus numerous spool ups. I smoked my Scorpion 4035 500KV because I used the 10mm motor mount bolts that came with the kit.The bolts compressed the leads which contacted the windings and when I reached about 60% power the windings torched.I talked to Lucien at Scorpion and he said that he's seen this about 10 or 12 times.Be careful with your motor mount bolts with Scorpion motors!I wonder why Avant and Scorpion didn't talk.
Back to the CC BEC, it seems that it would have failed when the motor shorted like that, I did end up spooling it up about 5 times trying to trace where the smoke was coming from as I couldn,t find the short and the motor continued to run.
I am worried now with all the negative comments about Castles Creations products. Their ESC's are junk! Their BEC's are junk!
I have never had a problem with any of their products and I have had 10 or more ESC's and BEC 's but all this negativity is getting to me.
Someone please say something good about Castle Creations!
Thanks sseppala

My avant came with 8mm bolts for the motor. I've been using castle stuff in a few electric planes and a trex 600 for a while and never had any issues with their products.

BEC eAurora

On a brighter note, my first flights with the Avant e were great.
This is the first heli that I've ever built that required no trim adjustments at all on my first flight. It was perfect balance and trim. I never even leveled the swash plate with the leveler, only by eye.
This is one sweet flyer so far.

When and how do these fail?
No real time frame when they fail but when they do they either:

(1) Fail to the full open position and whateven voltage you are using to power the BEC is fed directly to all your electronics Imagine 50+ volts going to your electronics

(2) Wires come loose on the board and they just stop working. No need to say what that does
