I am new to electric heli. I fly the 600N. I bought the 450 for my 13 yr old son to learn with .Can anyone recommend what battery we should use, that would last longer. He is hovering about 10 minutes, then I make him stop.

Also I am unsure of how low to run the batteries down. What determines when I must quit flying, and what will happen if the battery gets too low.

I use this charger with 30A power supply and charge all 4 of them

+1 on great dad. U want to keep at least 3.7 on each cell. If they are drain too much shortens the life of the battery, may puff, or even catch on fire. you can get a cheap lipo detecter or just fly for 5 min see were the cells are at. If you still have some juice then you know you can go a lil more. If your running 2200mah I think 10 min is kinda long. But you need a ok charger to tell you the individual cell voltage.

You should have an ESC with a low voltage cut-off. Make sure that's set for 3.3V or higher. Set it for "soft" cut-off (versus hard).

After a few minutes of flying, the motor will start pulsing or providing about half normal power - just enough to barely fly. That means to land now.

10 minutes is long, but feasible - if the head speed is low. 10 amps for 10 minutes should be about 75% capacity used.

That being said - check the voltage once you're done flying that pack. If it's below ~11V (3.3V / cell), you've flown too long.

Any battery that is suggested here should work. I prefer, and would recommend, Lectron Pro 2200mah 40C batteries made by Common Sense RC. You can find them for around $30 each. Plus they have great customer service. Also, the charge rate is 2C, meaning you can charge them safely at 4.4 amps.

As for the the length of time you should use a pack, well, that will vary depending on setup and flying style. After, say a 5 minute flight of normal flying, charge the battery and check "how much you put back in the pack" (assuming your charger gives this information).

Then take that number and divide it by the total capacity of the pack. For example, you have a 2200mah pack and after a 5 minute flight you charge it and put in 1600mah. Take 1600mah and divide by 2200mah. This equals .7272. In other words, you used 1600mah of 2200mah, which is about 72% of the pack. A rule of thumb is to stay at or around 85% of the pack. So, you can actually get more flight time. When you are putting back about 1760mah in a charge, you are right at the sweet spot. These are not actual numbers, just an example of how to calculate how long your flight times should be according to your setup and flying style.

Just take a few batteries and do some experiments. Fly each pack with your normal flying style. Try one pack at 5 min, one at 6 min, and the other at 7 min. Or use 30 second intervals. What ever works.
