I'm building a Logo 500SE today and noticed the boom has two semi-circular notches at 180° apart on one end of the boom. The other end is un-notched. There was nothing in the manual about boom direction. I assume these notches are to clear the belt on the tail end. Is this correct? TIA.

Notches are for the plastic tail case. Not needed on the SE as it has a CF tail case.......Ron

Notches don't matter, I put mine forward though.

FYI, when you install the tail and go to the adjust the belt tension. You cannot get the belt tight enough with the rear adjustment alone. Put the rear tail boom clamps at the very back of the tail boom, then pull the boom slightly out of the front frame to get the final tension. Check and adjust if necessary after the first couple flights.

I've yet to pin my front or rear tail boom. After 6 flights of hard 3D it didn't move one bit until I stuck the tail completely in the ground on a low rainbow. That rotated the rear tail case about a 1/4".

Here are some pics. It may be a new cutout due to the changed location of the idler pulley. It makes sense since the old idler pulley location didn't provide clearance for the belt at the bottom of the boom. What do you all think?

How in the world did you have get proper belt tension with the tail case that far forward? You must have the boom pulled way out of the frame?

No, it is all the way in the frame. This is a brand new kit. I'm guessing Mikado made a change.

OK, here's the deal with the slots and half moon cutouts on the 500SE boom. THere are two longer platic slots in the 20mm boom block collar that those mate up with. Not sure exactly when Mikado added this but older collars did not have those. I just built an SE for a friend and noticed the addition last week. These should prevent any need for pinning the boom as it can't rotate up front now.

The half moon cutouts go towards the rear and are meant to mate up with the half moons on the plastic tail case. THey serve no purpose whatsoever on the CF tail case. Also when mated up with the slots up front the half moons point towards the size so they have nothing to do with extra spacing for the belt.

Thanks for the input Big Fil. One thing you could clear up for me then. My boom has no slots and there is no corresponding tennon/raised point in the boom housing to engage a slot either.

I have a concern about the belt getting scraped along the edges of the semi-circular cutout as I have it presently installed. Should I rotate the boom 90° to prevent this, or am I OK to leave as it is?

Thanks for the help.

PS, The 500SE manual needs some work. There are many ambiguous assembly steps. For instance, on page 3 (Mainframe), there is no leader indicating where the four M2.5x16 screws go and no indication at all about where the four M2.5x12 screws go. I had to referenced my 600 manual at this step. The worst part is the M2.5x10 screws that are used to assemble most of the frame will thread part way into the nut if used at the bearing block location instead of using the proper M2.5x12 screws. This could create a hazard if assembled incorrectly. Also, the M3x10 screw that fasten the hexangonal stiffeners are not labeled at all on page 3. On Page 3 alone, I found 5 errors and/or ambiguities.

I've built a few 600's previously, so I already knew how to build a Logo. My concern is for the first time Logo builder.

I had the same concern when I saw your picture. I would think that is not a good idea and could cause belt wear and tear. I installed my boom 90 degrees off of yours so the semi-circles are point to the left and right.

Now I'm thinking about just putting the circle side of the boom forward in the frame.

I couldn't agree more! I really really like this helicopter, but the manual is serious fail boat. The manual is basically an exaggerated engineering blow-up diagram. There are little to no actually assembly instructions or better close-ups of the technical assembly areas.

I too agree the manual needs some work. I had a few issues building my L500se, and maiden didn't go well. Got a lot of great info on areas to double check from the other members, THANKS! Hope to fly it this weekend if the rain subsides.

rexxipilot - As others have suggested I would rotate those cutouts 90 degrees so they are pointing towards the sides.

If you want a second set of eyes to check things over before you do the 2nd maiden flight let me know. Looks like Sunday might be free of rain, if so I'll probably be flying when I need a break from working on the cars.

Thanks BigFil. I think I'm going to do as Anthony.L suggested and turn the boon around so the semi-circles are inside the frame.
