I've decided on a FBL 550 for my next heli and have been reading up on it. I want to use a Microbeast, CC ESC, a 650 on the tail, Fusuno frames and fins, 550 blades, and any other necessary upgrades.

Would it be cheaper to just go ahead and buy it piece by piece instead of buying the kit and having to sell off all the extra pieces? Has anyone done this?

I'm sure it might not save anything but you'd have extras of anything that came in multiples.

+1.
Just go into GrandRC's FBL combo and select only the things you want.

But you still can't alter the basic components of the kit, just the electronics and blades.

If you want fusuno frames and fins and QuickUK upgrades like the tail you're going to have to just add them into the price.

+1 I got mine from Grand RC without the 3g. You pick and choose what electronics you want.

If it were cheaper to build something buying it piece by piece, people would have figured that out long ago.

No, it's not going to be cheaper to buy it piecemeal. Buy the kit from GRC without electrics, or buy the kit and sell the stock electrics, you'll be way ahead of the game.

I build my Align helicopters piece-by-piece because in the end only about 30% of the helicopter is stock. I save money that way.

I would rather buy the kit instead. Why? Because you always need extra parts or crash parts. Plus you can always sell the 3G unit, and others if you don't need it.

Same thing gamegeek... i prefer to build my 550e part by part. Castle ICE 100, Castle Bec Pro, BeastX, Hypérion servo, Tarot parts, Turnigy motor T600, revco 20T pinion, 3D Pro blades, all Tarot aluminum upgrades parts, Quick UK carbon tail, Rc Booya canopy fix... to have really heli i want. I'll use a lot of electronic parts from my old 500 (esc/ubec/fbl module, canopy spacers...).

Look at AC-RC Hobby for Tarot parts for 550e Bought all parts available here yet and they are very good quality and quick shipping and almost decent price !

I doubt its gonna be cheaper, especially at grand rc. Their stock Align 550E combo kits are hundreds more than from what I've seen at competitors stores.
