Thats crazy, they were selling the 50 hyper for 169$ all last year.

I don't see how the market could bear an increase in pricing.

Since GP took over a few years ago, they have priced themselves pretty high. That's why I use YS for helis. Planks I use YS 4-strokes and Rossi 2-strokes, though most 2-stroke are few for me.

Another thing to think about is the regulator is made here in the USA. That price is added to the over all cost of the motor. I agree the prices are high, but I have always enjoyed the O.S. motors. I just bought the upgrade regulator kit for my O.S.55. Looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

Thanks,
Chris

I've owned plenty of OS Planker engines and man I sure do love the tunability of those engines. I could let one set up for a while and usually they'd fire right up and would only need one or two clicks if any to get em "just right". I'm now electric on helis though.

High Voltage just works better

If I recall correctly, Great Planes has been the importer of OS Engines for 25+ years now. Or am I confused?

209 way to much especially when you have the big block out. Unless they jacked the price up so peoplle guess they might as well spend a little more and get the 55

Hasn't 209 always been the regular price from tower? And wasn't the 169 price a sale price?

Answer = NO
I bought my two OS .50 Hypers for $169.00 and they were not
on sale. The $209.00 price was set After the OS.55 Hyper
was put on the market for sale $299.99 to make the .55 H
Look like a better price? I mean Bargain??

Before the OS .55 H was released Tower Hobbies was closing
out OS .50 Hypers for $119.99 NO BS

I seem to remember paying 189 for mine at tower long before the os55 came out. And I do believe just before the os55 came out, the price of the hyper went up and down for a while. I never saw it at 119. If I had, I would have bought two.

In fact I know that heliproz sold the hyper for 189.99 long before the os55 came out. And that it was cheaper than tower at the time.

Man, I miss the eighties.

Maybe its time for HobbyKing to do an exact knockoff of the OS engines. Bet that might bring the price down a little.

You're not confused. However, when I said a few years ago, I didn't mean for it to sound like 2-3 years ago, but like you indicate 25+ years. I thought 30+ years. I used O.S. Max engines as they were once called since 1968. They were imported in the US by World Engines in Cincinnati along with Super Tiger and I think Webra. All small companies. They were reasonably priced for a long time right up into the late 80's. But as Tower Hobbies, Great Planes, and Hobbico started trying to takeover the world, the prices went up as did Futaba. At that point, I changed to JR and YS. They continued to takeover the world by buying up all the great model companies. To be honest, their line of models are presently terrible and uninteresting now that they have eliminated the competition. Just my opinion. OS and Futaba make great products, but they are now overpriced. Just my opinion.

When the above Illinois companies decided to become a major corporation instead of a company that supports the hobbyist, that's when they overpriced themselves. This used to be a hobby an American kid could afford with a modest allowance or a paper route and a dream. Now it's an endeavor for mostly adults or one that would put a strain on most American families with more than one kid. It's too bad. Just my opinion.

Yep

I guess it's "pay if you want to play". Even the airplane guys are miffed at them wanting 145-150 for a stupid .25 engine.

Whoa. Got to throw the flag on the field for excessive misrepresentation of the good old days.

First off the dollar is in the toilet against other currencies. That is not a Tower Hobbies issue. They import OS from Japan. Dollar drops against the Yen and their cost goes up. We saw a spike across the board in prices at Horizon, Tower and others in 2008 or 2009 when dollar was down and oil per barrel was high.

Second. The concept that you used to be able to afford this hobby on a paper route is seriously flawed. Roll back to 1980. A 6 channel radio with zero features other than sticks was well over 400 dollars. An honest to goodness ringed ball bearing 50 was close to $200. In the mid 90's a Futaba 7 channel non computer radio cost me close to 400 dollars.

Today an 8 channel Spektrum is under 400 if you shop around. A flawless quality OS 50 is accessible for under $200 if you shop around. Maybe 209 at tower, but you can use all different kinds of discounts there. You also have to appreciate them not hugely undercutting all the dealers who buy through GP.

So back in the good old days, the actual dollar price of most items was the same as it is now. For older technology, and dollars that were worth a lot more. Wages are how much higher on average than 1980? 1990? And yet the number of dollars to buy most of our toys has remained mostly constant. I credit the buying power of these evil hobby corporations that keep those prices low. I we stayed with the mom and pop shops we would be paying $300 for a box of balsa sticks instead of quality ARF's and a couple grand for a box of aluminum heli parts.

Well if we're paying $8.00 USD for a #8 O.S. glow plug we're sure to buy their engines at an excessive price as well. Not withstanding the increase in prices on platinum and steel, etc. - the plugs costed $5-6 not so long ago. Come on now ... it's a glow plug! It's obscene what they charge for an O.S. 55HZ engine now.
