So I go to the club field today to fly my HC3SX flybarless gasser. Its like 62 degrees and I'm in a t-shirt looking to get some warm flights in the spot that I snow blowed a couple of weeks back to make room to takeoff and land.

I pull into the parking lot and see 1 car there, and there is a guy standing in the spot I cleared with what looks to be a long antenna, ah, he's flying 72Mhz was the first thing I thought. I get out, grab my heli and walk over and low and behond he's got a FISHING pole in his hands and he's casting out the bail onto the snow pack and reeling it back in!

I'm about to say "What are you catching?" and the first thing he says to me is, "I'm not crazy you know!". I said "OK no problem, but this is a going to be a good story on the forums tonight!" He sort of chuckled but probably didn't know exactly what I meant. Apparently he is learning to use this pole, and he said when you buy it you need to practice controlling the reel as its a new design and you have to use your finger to stop it or something.

In any case, I invited him to stay and cast away from the pitt area while politely asking if I could take off and land from the circle that I snowblowed and he was absolutely fine with that which was great. I got my flights in, and he got his fishing practice in

After he left, on one of my inverted autos the motor died out when I rolled around and I did'nt notice right away, tried to bail out because I was unsure I could plant it in a 10x10 circle but she wasn't coming back to life and I realized late and was forced to land a good 150 feet away in the snow pack. DAMN! And I got my sneakers on and didn't want to walk in all that snow to go get it.

So I start my way over there after realizing that's the only way to get it back and then the thought dawns on me...Why should I carry it back? So back to the pitt area I go, grab the starter, put the radio on idle, throttle hold, and walk back slowly to the heli trying not to sink into the snow but its not working out great with 60 degree weather. I finally get there, put the pull starter on, and give it a yank and the engine roars back to life. I plant it back in the snow nice and rigid, and attempt to walk back in my own footsteps to reduce the amount of snow I have to step in. I'll say I was glad to not be carrying the heli back, as a couple of times I lost my balance and had to swing my arms around to regain it!

Finally got back to the pitt, grabbed the TX, spooled up and she was back in the air. I thought to myself, GOOD IDEA taking the starter over, as that actually worked out better than trying to carry it back!

All in all a good day, just wanted to post something for you guys that I thought you might get a chuckle out of reading.

Be good and catch you guys later!

Leave the starter on and you wouldn't have had to think about it...

The pull starter is small and can easily fit in a shirt pocket. Leaving the starter on the helicopter just gives you one more thing that can fall off. A starter falling off when you are inverted and hitting the blades will most certainly total the helicopter. Unless you can be absolutely certain that the starter is affixed to the bottom of the helicopter (which I have not found to be possible with the Spectra), then I think it is better to actually remove it before flight. I tried placing a plastic block on the side of my Spectra starter, and I still found it could wiggle its way off. I like the removable starter.

Justin Starters can be permanently attached. This idea would have saved you several whacks in the nuts, FYI

Lost a starter

I lost a starter on my Predator when I forgot to remove it before takeoff. Saw it go down but kept my eye on the heli. Never did find that thing. It Must have gone in the woods but I was sure it did not. Even went out one day with florescent orange paint and walked a grid marking where I turned. I think I'll start painting them with the orange and then maybe I'll be able to see them better when they do come off.

Or better yet put a "remove before flight" tag on it.

Thanks for sharing Raja. Your posts do generate discussion that is obtuse to the original subject. Makes us do some real thinking.

This hobby is WAY too expensive!!

I was so disappointed that Raja's story didn't finish with him casting a lure and reeling the thing in by the nose....

LOL, that's exactly what I was thinking the conclusion of this post was going to be as I was reading through it.

Raja,

I understand the HC3SX does not currently include a FailSafe setting. Have you got some interim solution?

Thanks.

Hi Ian

In fact yes I do have a solution because I'm still on my 72Mhz that I like very much and I'm not using it as a receiver just as a gyro and flybarless unit.

I think you will only have the issue of no failsafe if you are trying to use the unit with no external receiver but the satellites. With that being said I think that HC is working on a solution for this as well as a couple other updates to make the unit better.

wow, what a coincidence, this is what happened to me,, read on,,

it was 62 degrees here today (and it was) so I pack up my trusty Raven and drove the 22 miles to the field, it was a wonderful day with a beautiful clear blue sky and lovely white clowds, the air was fresh and new and smelled so too, the wind was warm and made me feel good and warm allover, and gave me a good warm feeling inside that reminded me just how good it is to be alive,, but when I got to the field there was no one there, not even a fishermen, and then I remembered I didn't snow-blow this year so I didn't have a place to lift off from, so I went home, but that's OK because life is good and I know tomorrow will come and I can blow snow tomorrow,,

but just as I started to get in my van 2 guys showed up with fishing poles and when I asked if they were going fishing wam-bam I was in a fist fight with both of them, after the fight I looked over and I saw my mom, she was really scared for me. but she was mad too, She said you're moving in with your Auntie and Uncle in Bel Air. I begged and pleaded with her day after day but she packed my suite case and sent me on my way. She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket. I put my walkman on and said, "I might as well kick it". I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say is that this cab was rare. But I thought 'Man forget it- I got my heli- Yo home to Bel Air"
