A buddy of mine is wanting to buy a DX8 but I've heard like anything else when first released it had problems. I'm trying to talk him into a JR radio but thought I would ask before pushing him off on a 9503

thanks for any input just like to know if they have bugs worked out on the DX8

I love my DX8. Never had a problem with it but sent it in for the "update" just to be on the safe side. This past weekend had the first DSMX flight also without a glitch.

I pulled the trigger and ordered a DX-8 after tons of research between the 11X, 9503, and the DX-8. I went with the -8 because of the telemetery, backlit screen, throttle timer and DSMX ready to go out of the box without paying ANOTHER 75 bucks for an upgrade plus a reciever. It just made sense. And the price was really nice compared to the 11X. To each his own, but for my flying needs it fit the bill and then some.

forgot to mention he is just starting out learning the basics so he really doesn't need top notch but I thought if you were going to buy one way not go all out so you wouldn't need to upgrade later. There is a timer mod I have for $20 that will start and stop by throttle only. So that wouldn't be a big deal but the backlit light is really nice as I went from a 9303 to 9503 for that reason alone.

Like I said, for the price it just makes sense. All the features of the 9503, BUT comes with the newest RX and telemetery. VERY useful if you have a nitro bird, or electric as you can see the engine/motor temp and the batt voltage which could help save a newbie from frying a motor or puffing a pack. Don't let the issues worry you too much, they are worked out for the most part. Just ensure the user completes range checks every time.

Another big selling point was the ability to download updates from the internet right to the radio. No sending it in.

I'm a new DX8 owner. Have not used it yet but ended up having to send it in before I could do the 2.0 update to the firmware. I am excited about this radio and having the intigrated telemetry. The only thing is compared to my 10X it feels a little light weight/cheap. I have a feeling its plenty strong as I don't plan to stand on it. I've heard a few people on here saying they have some problems but I'm hoping sending it in will get it all checked out and problems solved. I'll post again when I get my radio back.

I've never met a helicopter I didn't like :)

I've owned my DX8 since September (V1.00) and haven't had any problems flying it outside BUT three of us DX8 owners have had some pretty serious issues running them inside a metal building. Remains to be seen if the DSMX will resolve our indoor flying problems.

Having said that, I've flown my 450 running an AR6100e nearly out of sight. Never lost connection, no problems. I've also flown my Trex700 many times (AR8000) and a 50 (AR7000) - no problems. The telemetry has warned me several times when my engine is getting too hot.

Put the money back in my hand and I would buy the DX8 again. Just be aware of some of the issues and *really* pay attention to the message boards and HH/Spektrum updates.

I've had mine since early Dec. Have a thread started (see above) on problems and sending it in for repair. Outside, nice radio. Inside metal building for winter flying. Have spares handy. (or spare radio).

Boy, radio choice is a real toughy. Here is what I did...first, the 12x was almost 3-years away when I purchased my first digital radio. I looked at a lot of them. Held a lot of them. At the time, I chose a JR X9303. The reason I did so is I knew I eventually wanted to fly giant scale, and at the time, 9-channels the big ticket. Who would have thought I would ever need 12-channels (except for the war bird gurus and all their fancy bomb drops, retracts, etc..). Also, durability was important to me.

So, here is what I would say to your buddy. What type of flying does he want to do? Will he ever want to go big? If so, buy the one radio to rule them all right out of the gate. It will save him money in the long run because he will go big and want the killer radio. If all he will ever want to do is fly 4-6 channel small stuff, then the DX8 may just be his radio...

Happy Flying,

I went from a Dx6i started out hovering to a Dx7,x9303,11x and now back to a x9503. The olny reason I got away from the 11x was because I flew pinched and 11x did not feel right was to wide. Now after flying the pheonix sim I started flying thumbs and now I want the 11X back. But I'm totally happy with the x9503 because I can't believe most Tx don't come backlit. That was the biggest winner over x9503 and 11x.

I agree with the last post, if your going to buy one go big and don't bother with ugrading later. I don't see him flying scale but if he wanted a Trex 700 down the road would't the Dx8 fly it all day.?

One other question?

If he buys one from LHS does he need to turn around and send that in or should he have them order in another one that might be already updated. As it should be if there coming straight from Horizon.

Does not seem to matter where or when you got it. Mine is in for the v2.0 feature enablement...ya I am one of the lucky 400(ish).

Sent in last Friday, it just got there today. Tech has been assigned, but no report of work starting yet. Guess my trex stays parked for another weekend.

That would suck to have to send in right away after there bought. Why don't they just do a damn recall on them all and send back the good ones to your LHS. If I was buying it and not my buddy I would shoot right for a X9503 and be done with it.

Guess my buddy went to LHS today and talked to them about this thread here and needing to send in. One of the guys called Horizon and they opened all the DX8 boxes they had and Horizon said all were good and didn't need to send any of them in.
Did this guy really from Horizon really know what he was doing or are they all ok?

If so I'm sure he will be buying one real soon.

Your friend will know when he tries to download the v2.0 update after registering.

This has been my concern all along. How do I know that when I buy a radio, it is truly DSMX compliant? According to some on this board, there is a small "X" in the upper righthand corner of the screen, as with the 12X...BUT...it is a tad late when you find out your LHS "said" one thing, and you find out after opening the sealed package, you have something else. If you think they are above this type of behavior, think again

That is why I am waiting for IRCHA. That is where I will buy my DSMX compliant radio. I will opne it right there and boot up the radio and verify it IS DSMX compliant, then I will have a ball setting it up and taking her for a spin

Well I know they opened the boxes but don't know if they knew about the X in corner. Buddy said they were looking at numbers behind the battery.

Yeah, you have to have a radio that has an LCD screen because it is an "X" on the screen according to a photo one of the members posted on FG...
