My ignition takes anything between 4 and 10 volts. Lipo, life, nimh etc.

Your recommendations appreciated.

What type of battery?
What size Mah?

Many thanks
C.

Some of the plank flyers at our field use Hobbico LiFe packs for their gas 48-60cc engines. I see seperate 1800mAh packs used for the ignition and 22-2400 mAh packs for the Rx+servos. All the plank flyers I've talked to said the LiFe packs are easier to take care of and less worry.

Do you have a link to that CDI unit that takes up to 10V?

Keen to know more abut it.

The packs I see being used by these 1/4 scale guys were all LiFe Source packs which were all labeled 6.6 volts. I didn't see anyone using regulators, they were all running straight connections from the LiFe packs to the Rx and CDI unit. I didn't hear anyone express any concern or talk about any problems with the slightly higher voltage of the LiFe pack over a standard 4 cell Nickel pack. They all told me the 6.6v packs were plug and fly, they didn't even think about the slightly higher voltage anymore.

Thanks for answers guys.

It does seem to me that the best solution will be a LiFe 6.6v or Li-Ion 7.4V straight battery. Nobody seems to be using LiPo for Ignition modules - there must be a reason for this, I just dont know it.

As for the ignition it is the box that comes with the Webra 150i engine - the Webra Spark II. The manual says it takes from 4-10V battery packs.

Once again thank you for you replies

LiPo batteries are rarely used by experienced modelers for a gasser ignition because they are the most vibration sensitive of all the lithium based cells.

The plastic pouch LiFe batteries seem to be more vibration sensitive than the metal case LiFePO4 A123 batteries (AKA Li-Ion batteries).

If the longevity of your battery is a concern, it seems that buying a 2S A123 battery pack will be the better choice.

When it comes to choosing A123 battery packs, you have to choose between spot welded cells and soldered cells. There is no concrete evidence I have found for which method is better, so it's probably best to choose a name brand battery pack from a manufacturer with a good track record (or better yet to do it yourself) so you can be certain the attachment method for the battery leads to the cell will not be a point of failure.

If you're not running a generator backup, a failed connection to your receiver RX will indeed result in a crash.

Irregardless of the battery you choose, it would be a good idea to wrap it in foam because even with the smoothest of gasoline engines, the vibrations will eventually damage your receiver battery pack. No battery chemistry or attachment technique is completely immune to the effects of vibration.

J.S.

Thanks for your reply as well.
I will eventually settle on a Li-ion pack.

Thanks.
