For a typical 500-size model (Atom, Trex 500, etc.), running digital servos (MKS 9660A+, 8910A+) on 6vdc, 6s main battery, 430mm blades and flybarless, what is the proper size amperage BEC?

I've so far been told to run:

...the CC BEC Pro by Clint for extra insurance
...the Dimension Engineering Sport BEC by Alex

My ESC's internal BEC (Castle Phoenix ICE) apparently shouldn't be used with FBL due to the increased amp draw.

Does anyone have any actual data on how much current a typical FBL 500 radio system pulls?

honestly the castle pro bec isn't bad on the cost end and will be more than enough for a 500.

i'd imagine someone else will chime in about a Hercules bec also

Trev,

Yeah, I forgot about the Hercules Mini and regular BECs. Both are obviously a bit more costly than the CC Pro.

I was just curious what kind of actual numbers are being drawn.

I may wind up just going with the Castle unit to keep things affordable and brand-cohesive with my ESC.

I've seen people running the little CC 10-amp BEC, the Dimension SportBEC and similar smallish BECs and just wonder if these people are really running dangerously undersized or what?

If this model was anything larger 550+, or the 450, this wouldn't be a question.

when i had a 500 it was a flybar and i ran the little blue castle bec and it did just fine.

i tried the same little blue bec on my 600 and it was just enough with the flybar. once i went flybarless it would cut out and the 3g / rx would reset on me in flight. caused a few crashes.

in my mind the little blue castle should be just enough for the 500 FBL and i actually think one of the guys i fly with is using the blue one on his FBL 500 with futaba 9250/9257. never seen power issues with that heli.

Digital servos can draw as much as 2A (or higher) each under load.

No clue what FBL systems are pulling. Interested in this piece of info.

Unfortunately many copy without knowing if indeed such is or can become an issue. True way to find out is to use an inline amp reader
(ie Watts up) to really find these mysterious numbers.

Try rcgroups as well for such info...

I have a friend who used a five amp BEC for his Trex 550 and he had a brown out on the bench...

I went total overkill on my Atom and installed the WR Super Hercules (10 amp, 14 amp peak).

Five amps, to me, is a bit too low, 10 amps is overkill (but won't hurt anything). Probably about 7 amps would suffice.

Purchasing a good BEC is cheaper than replacing a helicopter.
