Here is a service manual for your PC. The part that may be bad is called a PCA switch. If you get your lights and and it will not turn on it could be this switch. There is some HP forums that others have the same problem as yours with the same PC.

I had a problem with my laptop. The battery was on its way out and when I pluged in the laptop to AC power and turned on the computer it would power the lights turn on the switch then everything would go dead.It was drawing to much amps because of the battery pack was no good. Then I found out that the jack in the back of the PC was disconnected from the mother board because of the current draw it melted the solder off the connector. Took the hole thing appart solder the connector and just use it without the battery. I replaced the charger thinking that was the orginal problem an upgraded one that has an auto shutoff if it over heats or too much current and will still shut off if the battery is installed. Replacement parts are expensive $100.00 for a charger and $195.00 for a new battery.
