My new rear bearing came with shields on, what's the safest way to remove them without damaging the balls? Also the front bearing, I know to leave the front shield on for leakage protection but should I remove the shield on the inside of the front bearing? The old bearing on front came out with both shields on and the rear both shields removed. It was a used engine so the previous owner may have done it wrong. By the way it's a Saito engine for a plank, thanks.

With a normal pressed-in shield, there is usually a small gap around the centre where a scalpel blade can be inserted and twisted enough to distort the shield. When it's bent, just insert a small screwdriver and remove completely.

Make sure you do not break off the end of the scalpel, or if you do, retrieve the piece of blade from the grease.

If the bearings have tiny circlips, use the scalpel blade to winkle it out of the groove.

I always remove the inner shield from front bearings.

There is no reason to remove the inner shield from the front bearing. There is no benefit and a slight chance you will damage the retainer.

Also, if the Saito front bearing had shields, it was the WRONG BEARING! There are many dealers selling the wrong front bearing for the Saitos, including Boca! They SHOULD know better than that! All Saito four strokes should have a sealed front bearing to minimise oil leakage out the front and to make sure that the oil goes to the other parts in the valve train. Saito four strokes have a very short front section of the crankcase and don't have the close fit between the crank and case to limit oil migration like most other engines have.

Same for YS four strokes. If they are selling sets with shielded front bearings, it is the WRONG BEARING! YS front bearings are not lubricated by the crankcase because they have an O-ring or seal on the crank between the inner case and front bearing to prevent leakage of crankcase pressure. A shielded bearing risks losing all the lube and going bad quickly. Look at the parts diagrams for these engines.
