450 size electrics for me. In my opinion that size is the best balance of performance and cost, plus since my club field is a 30 minute drive away it's much more convenient during the week to go to the local school yard to go flying.

6s 450
That sure seems like a lot of battery for a 450. Mine only uses a 3S and I have seen people use 4S, but that is about it.

I did the calculations and really don't see what the advantage is. You are running approximately 2944 headspeed.

3S 2200mah 30C
Weight: 171g
3500kv motor
13T pinion
150T main gear
efficiency 90%

RESULTS
34965 motor rpm
3030 head speed rpm

6S 1300 mah 25C
Weight: 210g
1700kv motor
13T pinion
150T main gear
efficiency 90%

RESULTS
33966 motor rpm
2944 head speed

Sorry, but I don't see how it is better. You have a lower headspeed, more weight from the 6S battery. You also have to do mods to make it fit as well. I am also running an Align 35A ESC and it works great. Since I switched to a 30C battery, my power has really jumped up and stays really cool. Now I have seen guys use a 4S 1800mah battery. If they use the same engine setup, you will get around 4000 rpm head speed.

No mods on heli for 6S. Just make a couple of new holes in canopy.

I get around 3150 rpm measured with Eagletree. Now that I've gone FBL with the Beastx I get 7 mins of airtime with capacity to spare, but I'm no ace pro, my most demanding manouver are probably elevator tic tocs.

Adavantages:

- Cheap LiPos
- LiPo longeivity much longer due to low current draw
- Much smaller voltage sag during flight
- Seems to be far better in cold weather than 3S (probably due to lower voltage sag spread, but I'm not 100% sure)
- Longer flight times
- Unboggable
- Benifits go on and on

I had to go from 3s 30C to 45C to make my 450 unboggable. Going to 6S would have done the same. But I found it to be more convenient to use the 45C batteries and keep the helicopter 3S. But I think the high current draws with 3s are hard on the batteries. A high voltage setup would probably allow for longer battery life. Still, 6s is a little bit more of a PITA on a 450 than is 3s.

Are you sure? If I do anything, I may go the 4S route. Look pretty impressive when I saw it.

When I used to use 20C batteries, they would get really hot in the 130-140 degree range and puff. Since I went to the 30C, they barely get warm and don't puff. So I don't believe my batteries are getting stressed out at all. I did the math and not sure how you got 3150, but ok. Regardless, if it works for you, then go for it.

The 500 is a great all round heli. Is it the perfect size? Probably not, bigger helis fly much nicer in my opinion. Not to say that the 500 is bad, I have 3 of them at the moment (and love them) along with a good selection of both larger and smaller models, the wife says I have far too many.

The thing is, we have to remember that for its size the 500 is quite heavy and suffers from a high disc loading so relies on brute horse power to fly, unlike the larger models which although heavier don't need to use every bit of available power to deliver high performance.

Little boys never grow up, their toys just get more expensive!

I've always run 4s before my Pro 6S.. the 6S will blow the doors off the 4s and at the end of the flight your headspeed is right where you started the flight..

My current setup:
Scorpion 2010kv
13t Pinion
Ice 50
Headspeed 3375 RPM

Here is a screen capture of a recent flight data.

I currently have a 550 3g (fly's like a dream) but i noticed align is coming out with a less expensive 500 http://www.alignrcusa.com/index.php...4cac583beec6ae1 I was going to get a 450 pro to practice maneuvers but i may go with this affordable 500 instead.

^^That's AWESOME!! Thanks for the heads up. Plastic head, tail, belt drive, MX motor, and a better price.

I never minded plastic heads (grips) and I always liked the belt driven version of the 500 better than the TT. Lots of weight-savings throughout. Looks like a winner--except for the colorless canopy paint scheme =-(

Only affordable becase they built it cheaper. I personally don't care for it at all. Down the road, you will end up spending more.
