Hi all,

This is my first time setting up an ESC thoroughly (i.e. not plug and play).

My current set up is an Flybarless Rave 450, with the ICE 50 ESC and the Scorpion HK2221-6 Motor with the 13 tooth pinion.

This is a flybarless model running 350mm blades.

Now when I go through the config, and 'set RPM', then enter the the pinion and main gear information. The least headspeed I seem to be able to set this to is 4000 for the governor to operate properly.

From what I have read on a Rave 450 the headspeeds seem to be around 2600 to 3600 depending on what style of flying.

I am trying to get this configured for 3D flying capablities, so I was aiming around the 3300 mark.

Is this correct? and have any of you guys configured this kind or set up, or something similar?

Cheers,

Andy

Have you tried lowering the pinion down to a 12T? That will help lower the rpm.
Another way I have adjusted the rpm is to set the esc in gov high, set the throttle curve in NORM, IDL1 and IDLE2 to different values to adjust your head speed. Using this way would allow you to adjust the rpm from your TX.

Below is an example only. RPM test flight and adjustment required.
Normal= 0-50 Linear and then flat line across. RPM = 2800
ST1= 60% flat line. RPM = 3000
ST2= 65% flat line. RPM = 3150

In many ways I prefer to make changes from the radio. It just makes life easier.

Another nice thing about the Ice controller is that you will be able to log graphs and see how efficient your setup is. You will be able to make changes based off of real numbers.

Cool, Thank you for your reply.

I too have always preferred to change it on my transmitter, like the Align ESC's.

But were advised that the ICE ESC require further configuration to get the best performance out of them.

Regards,

Andy

FWIW the Rave with 350's needs no more than 3000 headspeed WITH a flybar let alone without for awesome 3D performance.

Running a 13T pinion with the -6 is going to be a very inefficient setup, I would be using a 12T and govern to 3000... actually I would be using an 11T at 100% flat, as that is what I am actually using!

60% of the time, it works every time!

the 13t pinion is the way to go for performance with -6 and 350s.

You are running 3S correct? I looked at an old setup file I had for -6 3S and it was a 13 tooth setup and I had set RPM mode and normal was 2800, idle 1 was 3000 and idle 2 was 3100. I have to presume you have something set incorrectly in the speed controller setup. If you are using 4S that is too much for -6 motor and would recommend -8

It is 3s pack, I will have to double check my set up with in the esc, it seemed way out when it wouldn't give be a valid figure under 4000 rpm on the lowest stick position.

I will double check.

Thank you.

Are you using set RPM mode? If you are, PM me your email and I will send my setup file that all you should have to do is upload it to your speed controller

It will at least give you a starting point

did you set up all the motor and gearing information? the motor is 6 poles 4400kv, 177 tooth main gear, 13 t pinion. then what do you have set for the battery voltage?
