I'm new to 90 class electrics... I have a couple questions.

What is an appropriate backlash?

Word on the street is to lube the main gear since engine oil will be absent... What is a good lubricant?

Anything else to be on the lookout for?

motor: HK-4035-500kv
ESC: CC 80HV
batts: 2x 6S Hyperion 35C 5500mAh
target power: 3.8~4hp

Thanks!

Set backlash with a piece of paper. Don't use any oil on the gear. Delrin does not need to be lubricated.

Hi Andy, Is the motor you used an extended shaft motor. Did you make the frames your self or is this a conversion kit. Where did you get your pinion gear. Thanks Leon.

Leon,
Is the motor you used an extended shaft motor.
I originally intended to use a long-shaft motor in order to use the stock (unmodified) Stratus upper bearing block. The retailer I bought the motor from shipped a short-shaft motor. I pressed out the 10x19 lower bearing and pushed the 6x19 bearing to the bottom of the bearing block.

The side frames were cut at a local PCB fabricator from a DXF file I provided.

Scorpion mod 1 pinion, 10T.

Update:

Found some main gear dust after flight #1. Futaba servo gear grease works great on the main gear.

Flight #2 was a solid 8 minutes putting back 2950mah into each pack. This is idle-up 1 at 1800 RPM.

Data logging shows:
3242/898 watts pk/avg
68.2/19.3 amps pk/avg

So far so good with the ICE 80HV. For flight #3 I'll try idle-up 2 (1900 RPM).

I only have a couple more flights to report on.

Peak current 78amps. I'm still flying in Idle1 at 1800RPM. The T/R response is a bit 'loose' in Idle2... I have to remember to adjust those settings prior to powering up the ESC!

The last two charges put 5900mah back in (2950 per pack). Charging in parallel seems to be working well. I could up the timer to 10 minutes, but will wait until I get a couple of flights in in Idle2 (1900RPM).

Looks like your pinion needs to be moved up.Maybe where the dust came from.
