Please be aware that a NJ based hobby-tool supplier has quietly and consistenly switched name-brand tools for knock-offs. I found this out when I had a failure of a relatively expensive tool and they had the testicles to refer me to the original manufacturer for parts support. Upon describing the issue, the manufacturer took me point by point through the difference between the "real deal" and the "knock-off". The manufacturer, extremely well respected as a tool supplier and highly involved in model railroading activities, provided quite a list of their products that had been, I will politely state, reverse engineered to a lower state of quality. Buyer beware!

I don't think you would break any rules by Naming and Shaming Who ever it was. Doesn't sound like they are into helis anyways..

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

I agree, name and shame. Exposing a legitimate case of fraud is a little different than vendor bashing. This is something people need to know about and how not to get burned.

OK, after Mark's review and answering a whole bunch of PM's, the company in question is Micro-Mark. In my situation, the product purchased was a Sensi-Press. This is a small arbor press manufactured by Northwest Shortline (NWSL). My wife bought me a Sensi-Press, and it wasn't until the failure of the pinion that I had any reason to suspect that something was wrong. The real Sensi-Press has a steel pinion engaging a hardened steel ram. The offering from Micro-Mark, now sold as a "Press-It", uses a brass pinion with a softer steel ram. She still has the sales receipt from 2009 and it clearly states "Sensi-Press".

When I initially presented my issue to Micro-Mark, they refered me to NWSL. Upon speaking with Dave, the owner, I learned that I actually had a knock off. Going back to Micro-Mark with the issue, their response was that technically, it was not a knock off, as there were no patents nor infringement. When I pressed the issue that this was a subquality item initially sold as a name-brand item (Sensi-Press is owned by NWSL), Micro-Mark requested the return of the entire unit so that they can fit a new pinion. So get this, this shows their quality control! They can't send me just the pinion because all the units are slightly different and the pinion must be hand-fitted!!! What the !!!!

Beware of a wide range of cutting and forming tools. The Sensi-Press has become the Press-it. The Chopper has become the Chop-it. If you look at NWSL's range of tools and then compare them to their Micro-Mark counterparts, you will see what I mean.

I've purchased from Micro-Mark for many years, certainly at least 25. It will be a longer time before I purchase any significant tool from them in the future.

I wonder if the Attorney General would be interested in this.
I would ask them to send you what you paid for. The receipt should be a legally binding document.

They want me to send the whole unit back for retrofit. I am hesitent to do so, for I have a feeling I'll never see it again and there goes my evidence.

I have to give some thought to the best manner to proceed.
