Libel is No Path to a Civil Society

Posted January 10th, 2011 at 9:36am in Ongoing Priorities with 0 commentsPrint This Post Print This Post

All of us at The Heritage Foundation were profoundly saddened by the tragedy that occurred this past Saturday morning in Tucson, Arizona. We mourn all of those who lost their lives and are praying for a full recovery by all of the surviving victims. As Speaker John Boehner said Saturday, “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve.”

Unfortunately, some have chosen to use this tragedy for political gain. Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, the Democrat who refused to enforce SB 1070, told FOX News‘ Megyn Kelly this weekend that the shooting was caused by an “atmosphere” created when “one party trying to block the attempts of another party to make this country better. ” In case there is any doubt in your mind who Sheriff Dupnik was talking about, one veteran Democratic operative, who, like Sheriff Dupnik, blamed overheated rhetoric for the shooting, told Politico that President Barack Obama should “deftly pin this on the tea partiers.”

Pressed by Kelly to identify ANY evidence linking the shooter to the tea party, Sheriff Dupnik admitted he had zero: “That is my opinion. Period.”

Americans like Sheriff Dupnik, who claim that they are interested in creating a more civil discourse, ought to think long and hard about pointing their fingers at other peoples’ words before making completely unsubstantiated accusations. Those who blame the rhetoric of their political opponents for these heinous crimes, when no such evidence exists, only further coarsen our civil discourse.

It is the mission of The Heritage Foundation to seek an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society flourish. A civil discourse is a key component to any functioning civil society. That is why we avoid all ad hominem attacks. But America is also well served by a muscular debate that fleshes out what the ideas are behind the policy proposals being considered. We cannot let one disturbed individual and political opportunists silence debate. That is why attempts to politicize this attack, even while Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) fought for her life immediately after the event, represent the worst, and most cynical aspect of Washington. That is the exact tone that Americans are entirely sick of.

It’s time to heal as a nation, undivided, and under God.

My Comments: For those liberal pundits that claim the tea party may have had something to do with the shooting of Gabby Giffords and her supporters along with a little 9 year old girl, its very interesting that Barrack Obama is one of the shooters heroes.

From his Facebook Page Loughner listed this group of radicals who inspire him:
People who inspire him include Barack Obama, Saul Alinsky, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Huo Chavez, Noam Chomsky, Mao Tse-tung, Joseph Stalin, and Yassir Arafat

Wow, guess we won't hear that on the media.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

I think its possible we just might Gyro.

The so called main stream media seriously made absolute fools of themselves analyzing this horrific event and place Palin. Limbaugh, and anyone on the right into the center of that shooting.

The speculation they have been putting out on this event from the moment it happened is just as horrific as the event itself and people are sick of it. and its getting a lot of attention this time.

I think its very possible we might be hearing a lot more on this matter.

Its coming to the point where its increasingly obvious that absolutely nothing is beneath the left wing pundits out there. Nothing.

I'm sure. But here, you have the libs that have infested 90% of the major media. There is only one source for news that is either neutral or maybe a little right leaning unless you jump on the net. Our news sources are severely left leaning and getting worse. It's been this way since I can remember back in the 70's. Plus out educational system is very left leaning from the top people in Washington, down to the teachers at every level. Our kids are being brainwashed before they ever get a chance to form their own opinions. I had to work very hard over the years to make sure my kids weren't swayed by the system.

Thats one up for you to teach your kids independent thought.Rupert Murdoch seems to influence the easily led here through his "Comic book"news papers. He backed labour ,they won, this time, conservatives, with a few now "Tame"liberals in a coalition. To their credit the cons are tackling our huge debt.

Posted this in another thread but thought it deserved mention here also. Another tidbit of information you probably won't hear from the mainstream media while they play pin the blame on the Tea Party.

CBS News Justice and Homeland Security correspondent Bob Orr said on "Face the Nation" Sunday, "We do know from our sources and from our national security analyst Juan Zarate that Loughner had an interaction once before with Congresswoman Giffords back in 2007, where he apparently posed a question to her, kind of a benign question.

"She answered the question; he didn't find it acceptable, he didn't like the answer," Orr said.

"In the time since then, investigators believe perhaps he was tracking her and targeting her in a very loose way," Orr told CBS chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer.

For those of you outside the US, there was no Tea Party in 2007. And Sarah Palin didn't come on the national seen until 2008, followed by the Tea Party protests in early 2009.

It may be he wasn't tracking her, but whoever was in that position. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords didn't seem to be the inflammatory type.

Maybe not...just speculation on my part. Maybe he was trying to impress Jody Foster.

um, first, the was Mein Kampf and whatever that other org was that was on his myspace page that had something to do with Jews. I have a feeling this was because she wasn't left enough for him AND more importantly, she was Jewish and proud of it.

From everything I have read on it he has had grief with her for years and has been on authorities radar since at least 2007. And thats the thing, the msm wants to paint it as being driven by talk radio, palin, and the tea party when apparently this guy was more liberal than she was. So how is that supposed to be motive? Other than they want to change the rules to silence any debate that doesnt agree with them.

Holy matzo balls, I didn't know she was Jewish. That alone makes her a target of half the fringe groups in the country. Mein Kampf certainly provides the fuel for the anti-semitism nuts.

Two fringe teams blaming each other and the actual player isn't even on the field. Btw remember the Oklahoma city bombing, I knew they
were muslim.

no really. There are stories and pics all over the net of her at temple and being proud to be the first Jew elected in Arizona. I seriously can't believe nobody is drawing that parallel. Seems to me to be the most obvious answer as to why this crap bag chose her.

Well heck.

They can't do that because it would take the fun away from the loony left as they blame it on Palin.

one more shred of proof this was the work of a Liberal, because we all know the right is a friend of Israel, not the left, ala Obama.
