Hopefully mother nature will cooperate with me so I can give my new 550 its first test flight!

Man, I am excited for you! Good luck getting sleep. Careful with that canopy and the snow....real easy to blend and loose orientation. Ask me how I know?

Thanx for the kind words guys. The tripod is called a Tilt-A-Whirl and you can find it @ http://www.prontow.com

Hey Noob, hear what you're sayin' about the canopy blending in w/ the snow. I plan on picking it up into a hover to get a feel for it. My CG seems to still be a little on the tail heavy side, even after repositioning the battery on the tray. I am super stoked to see this baby in a hover for the first time. I love the canopy, the photo does no justice for it...it really is lights out gorgeous!

UPDATE
It's a beautiful winter day here in Maine. No wind, sunny skies, and 42 degrees. I picked my 550 up into a hover and the notorious tail wag was there. I set the GP780 delay for small helis with 68% rate in N mode and got no improvement. I adjusted the gain %'s up and down several times bouncing back and forth between large and small heli gyro programming. No changes other than being able to slow down the wag. My throttle curve for N mode is 0,85,87.5,87.5,87.5 using a DX7 w/ stock electronics and 16T pinion. Should I take the Spartan ds760 off of my 500esp and try it or do you guys have any suggestions to offer me?

if you are running the 620 on the tail get a 650 or jr 8900g or something of that nature.

changing gyro's may not be a bad idea before you go buying anything because the 500esp is not going to fly much once you get this thing figured out.

and before you change your gyro or servo try moving the ball on the servo horn in another hole.

Who cares... its just money...

do you have a vibration coming from the tail? you shouldn't need to. and its just one more potential drag spot imo.

The tail fin is vibrating as far as I can tell. The wag has my attention more than the vibration. I did order the 2mm fusuno tail fin but it hasn't arrived yet.

Hey what do you guys think of this...during the build of the tail assy I noticed that the control links seemed to be a little tight where they mount to the tail pitch assy. I also felt that where the control link connects to the blade grip was a little tight. If I disconnect the tail push rod, the pitch slider doesn't feel like it is as smooth as it should be. I applied a little 3and1 oil to the tail rotor shaft for xtra lubrication but that didn't seem to improve it much. Could this possibly contribute to my tail wag problem? Also how tight should the collar screws be?

Rush,

I had a similar issue with the tail not sliding smooth and free. I found Locktite on the brass sleeve at the tail blade holder link connection. I also moved the servo ball in one hole. That may be a problem for you if you have the stock tail servo mount. I have a 600 boom mount and a CF pushrod I made. No more wag.

Don't fly it until you are SURE everything is right (-:

I'm going to pick up a few sheets of 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper @ the hardware store to sand the tail shaft, if needed. I definately will take the the tail apart and eliminate any and all friction that I can feel in the pitch slider assy. What sucks is that I work nights and this will have to wait until Tuesday morning.:

Should've banged in sick!

It has been suggested to me to move the CF plate from the top of the frame to the bottom, right above the aft gear strut. I will give that a try also.

Tail wag update

Well after taking the tail rotor off of the heli and disconnecting the control links from the blade grips, I did infact find threadlock on the outside of the brass collars. I cleaned up the collars and grip screws, then reinstalled on the heli. Binding is gone.
As far as the tail wag...well I'm pleased to say it is GONE!

I moved the ball link in one hole on the tail servo and set the GP780 delay for small heli. DX7 gyro gain is at 60%.

Now onto seeing what it is like in idle up!

Thanx to everyone who answered my posts and gave me great suggestions. You are all much appreciated!

Jodi

Sometimes you have to reduce gyro gain a little in Idle Up.
