T-REX 700 › Trex 700E slam to the ground now there's gear noise

I slammed my 700e into the ground from a hover straight down shattering the landing gear and upon impact I could hear some gear wind. Turns out the front torque tube drive gear that meshes with the autorotation gear was cracked so I replaced it. It now is very tight and makes a winding noise when I turn it over. I don’t see any visual signs of anything tweaked. The pinion meshes fine with the main gear; all frame screws are set and look fine. I tried a different main shaft and still have the issue. Only thing left is to try a new autorotation gear which I have to order. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

could it be the mainshaft bearing blocks slightly tweaked pushing the main gear assembly too far back?

You going to make it out to fly at Digs?

The Align gears are different from batch to batch, they are not consistently the exact same size (i.e. molded vs. machined).

I say fly it, the gears will wear in and after a couple flights you won't have any more noise. The good news is a slightly tight tail gear is a good thing, less likely to strip in flight from heavy 3D.

i agree fly it. most gears have a little bit of run in that sprays that nice white dust everywhere.

Who cares... its just money...

I spooled it up...

The gear wind was horrifically loud so I stopped. It was fine before the wreck but there is something definitely wrong now. I’m thinking the autorotation gear is slightly malformed but it is hardly visually noticeable. I may have to replace that gear and see if that makes a difference.

I have a window of opportunity on Sunday to make it out to Digs. I’ll see if I can make it.

I have some spare Mod .7 gears if you want to try those out, would have to change the tail drive gears also I think. let me know and I can bring them

Disassembled one side frame

I disassembled the frame on one side and loosened all screws on the other side then reassembled and tightened everything. There is still some tightness in those gears. It is better though. Going to run it like it is and see what happens. A different autorotation gear made no difference.

I know the TT drive gears can look ok when assembling, but did you make sure the front bearing was snug on the race were the bevel gear begins? I have seen this before and the bearings are tight to get on especially the first that must be pressed all the way to the end. I would double check and Im referring to the bearing that would be the top one on the gear shown on the right...

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!

I replaced the front torque tube gear with HN7043T which is for the trex 700 nitro pro. I disassembled the gears and checked both the autorotation gear and the torque tube gear and the teeth do not mesh correctly. I can't believe I flew it like this a couple times. I'll have to find out what is the correct torque tube gear part number for my 700e. That should fix it right up.

Don't forget to replace the tail grip screws and inspect all parts of the tail. Don't take a chance on something being bent or partially sheered.
