Yay, just got a recall on my car. Seems the front mounting brackets for the rear suspension MAY rust out and break off. Yeah, I noticed that when it happened to my car last year. I called the local Honda dealership, they refused to work on it, told me they won't work on old Passports, would not give a reason. I drove it to a welding shop near my home. Very interesting to drive a vehicle where the rear axle shifts a foot forward or back on one side depending on if you are accelerating or breaking. There was not enough frame left to weld new brackets to. Two foot section of frame was just rust flakes and holes. Shop owner boxed in the length of the frame with new steel, front to rear, then fabbed a new bracket and got the suspension reconnected, all for $300. Luckily Illinois does not do vehicle safety inspections, no way is this car considered roadworthy.

Gotta find my receipt, see if Honda will reimburse the cost at least.

Call the regional Honda office and make a complaint. They will make the dealer get it right at the risk of losing Honda as a line.......Ron

I work at a honda dealer in erie p.a. and we are just getting these passports in for the recall.
we had one that was as bad as yours and we sent pics to american honda and they are replacing the whole frame!
the reason honda dealers don't like the passports is because they are really an ISUZU RODEO!
They have to honor that recall,if they don't call american honda and complain!

Yeah, I know it's a Rodeo. And Passports(Rodeos) are such pieces of carp that the dealership does not want to work on them. I know Honda wanted to break into the SUV market pretty bad, but they got reamed on that deal with Isuzu. The local shop said they would not be getting the parts in for the recall repairs till after mid January, so gotta wait for now.

Update. Finally took my Passport in for the recall repairs. They called me this afternoon. Said they had never seen a worse frame. Regional manager was there today too. They took pics and sent them to corporate. They are deciding whether they want to try to fix it, or just buy the Passport from me. They said I could come pick up the vehicle if I want, but highly recommend not driving it. Said I have to sign a waiver if I want to take the car off the lot before they make a decision about what to do. It is sitting on the lot for the weekend.

Thats awesome (sarcasm) so the only people that win is the dealer as you'll have to replace the car after they "buy" it (at a fair price I'm sure)

Ask your Doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.

Honda dealers here are great IMO. My Accord had an exhaust recirculation port plug up. Turns out there was a recall on that. They fixed it up right away. Required removing the intake manifold, machining, and installing a stainless liner. done quickly, done right, didn't cost a cent.

Just a tip for those who are in the northern states*, rinse your vehicle whenever you can!!!

They put a solution (at least Illinois does) on bridges and overpasses that is 10x more corrosive than salt. No joke.

This isn't going to help you with your current car, but it is something for those to think about who drive in the crud.

*(Yes,I know the northern states are called Mid-West by some. Geographically they are neither Mid nor West in the nation. I couldn't figure that out until I moved up there. Then I realised some guy in Chicago made it up along with the rest of the laws up there!

The company I work for got me a brand new chevy silverado in july. The rear bumper is already rusting pretty bad. As soon as I find the time I am going to take it to the dealer and see what they have to say.

I think the worst mistake Honda has ever made is associating themselves with Isuzu for the Passport . They needed a SUV for the market at that time and did not have anything in the works . Well, they paid the price . I have owned a small Honda only repair for 31 years and refused to work on Passports from the first day .
Having been around Honda for so many years I know Honda will take care of customers owning those vehicles .

Hey Ryan,

in regards to the Icing Solution, Just an FYI, so does Oklahoma. At least they did a few years ago. Calcium Chloride.

Really Corrosive!

That sucks. I guess the SUV I got will stick to the backroads. They are more fun in the snow anyway!

I just sold my "all aluminum" car... guess I better keep up on the washing!

Nah just hose it down with Corrosion X once a year... No problems after that.

Seriously though, what I did was make a PVC "Sprinkler" that I slid under the car after a major snow or Ice storm, and let it rinse the chassis after driving on the stuff. Very easy to do. It worked pretty good.

We'll at least as far as I can tell!

That is a really good idea!

That was one nice thing about the house up north- it had hot/cold water and floor drain in the garage so you could rinse off the car inside.

The downside of that is you had to make spacers for all of the tool chest because of the sloped floors! -unless of course you enjoy all of the drawers sliding open when you turn the key

I like the videos, especially where Isuzu says that the problem should not cause a loss of control of the vehicle. As I mentioned, when mine broke, it seemed the rear diff on the drivers side was shifting a good foot forward and backward as I accelerated or used the brakes. Yeah, no chance of loss of control there. Anyway, I have been doing some research, it seems Isuzu is low-balling people pretty bad where buyback is needed on the Rodeo (what they call stage 4 frame rust), but Honda is doing better with the Passports. I should know in a few days as I got a call yesterday from the dealership saying to expect a call from Honda Corporate with an offer.

That shows good customer service on the part of a Honda and shame on Isuzu especially when they are both made by Isuzu

2000 Tundra had sections of the frame completely rusted away. All Toyota did for me was to give me a hand job. Funny because all the morons on RR said it was my fault for not cleaning it. Funny part was my 4 runner was 10 years older and it had nothing more than mild surface rust.
