Folding eh? lol. If we were in a real helicopter forum they would be laughing at the fact you guys call yourselves pilots. Anyways, its stupid to argue about it cause in the end we all love helicopters. You can call yourself an astronaut for all I care. If you love to be around, talk about or fly in helicopters you are cool in my book. If you look at titles that were given to people all throughout history, almost any title came with some amount of honor with respect to that profession (i.e blacksmith, locksmith, doctor, jester, postman or attorney.) I spent years of my life inside a real helicopter, flying by a whole different set of rules, risking my life for a piece of the adventure. You have
then I have got to ask you, why did you come on here last week, cutting all of your "brothers" in love with helicopters to the ground, on Christmas Day, of all days, then erase most of your post and back out of your statements, and get to where your at here??? what did we "non-pilots" do to you in the first place?? your kinda caught up in a love/hate relationship it seams... even in this statement I have copied here, you start out cutting us down, then finish up loving us??

A little help from spell check please. It's "seem" not "seam". My dear partisan, I think you are taking this a little far. I am guessing at some point in your life you really wanted to fly helicopters (as a real pilot) and bashing me at every chance you get is your way of alleviating the guilt that you feel from your failed attempt to fly. I hope you have a great new year and I'm sorry if anything I said offended you. I don't want to argue with you anymore. Lets move on from all this foul talk and start a fresh new year with a positive attitude towards your new RR internet peer, Mr. Miyagi.

You're not a "pilot" if you fly an RC helicopter. Sorry to crush your dreams #HardTruth

Please start over and change your screen name and just act like you are new to the forum. This pile-on every time you post will never stop because people have long memories and short tempers.

I realize your opinion about "piloting" a heli has been taken as condicending and naive to some, but it is your opinion and I enjoy the forum's way of drawing out spirited debate.

Why is it that every post you make ends with an apology for a past post but begins with another insult?

I literally never use the word literally right.

From one "person who likes to manipulate toy helicopters" to another "person who likes to manipulate toy helicopters" or whatever terminology you want to use for others who enjoy the same thing you do, I'll get to what you are trying to ask as I see it.

The longevity of a "toy helicopter" flight is more in the power train, gearing etc than the frame. As the frame increases in size so does the consumption of energy used to lift it. So a 450 sized helicopter isn't going to fly any longer/shorter than the said....90 sized E helicopter. Same for a .15 sized walkera #83 verses a .90 sized Trex 700N.

That being said, I'm more familiar with electric 450 and 600 sized helis. Let's discuss 450's.

As I mentioned before it's mostly about gearing. A trex 450 and clones run 150T main gears and pinions that range from 10T to 15T (maybe higher but I haven't seen them). Anyway, 3S batteries in the 450 range from 1800 to 2500mah. If you want longer flight times then you could go with the 2500mah but would have to move the tail sevo to the boom on a pro and use a shorter linkage rod to the tail to get it to balance right. I'd recommend staying around 2200mah as you can still get 6.5min flight with reasonable performance if you use proper gearing. 3500kv to 3700kv motors can be run on 11-13T pinions fairly comfortably. I'd recommend 12T and flat throttle curves (not govorned because the amp spikes will drain your battery quicker) that will yeild around 2800 headspeed. You can fly lower headspeeds for longer flights but I had some slow wobble on my SEV2 that wouldn't go away till I got the speed up.

This would get you in the ball park of 6.5 minute flights hovering and gentle FF circuits and putting back roughly 80% or 1800mah back into your 3S pack.

Of coarse you can get into motor efficiency 4S and 6S packs etc...but I'm not going to write you a novel.

High Voltage just works better

FYI for anyone reading the title and looking for additional input, I've found an Align 450 SEV2 or clone there of is lighter than an Align Pro. Not much, but is Lighter. (I don't have any Align 450s, but clones, but I have weighed Aligns as well as clones)

Slower headspeeds as mentioned(say 2400) and a 2400mAh pack is about where I'd suggest off the cuff for long flight time w/o getting too heavy.
I did a 2800mAh pack in a 450 once and hovered for 13 minutes. It seemed heavy though and was a bit of a trick to get a good CG. I also pushed the limits of the LiPo which is not good for battery life. Flybarless gets you about 10% more flight time if you want to invest in the $$ and time.

Low gearing, low headspeeds and big batteries are the key to long flight times. If you are not going FBL then C of G is not as important, a Hyperion 3s 2600mah 35C pack only weighs 211g anyway. With some slight modding you can get a 3000mah 3s pack in a 450. A 450 with torque tube tail drive with be the most efficient.

60% of the time, it works every time!
