thx for the heads up on the tail grip orientation...lol. I thought something looked out of place. Any thoughts on the bearing?

Any thoughts on the bearing?
I've done a lot of searching and reading on the topic as I am curious as well.

What I've found is the rear position is the current correct position per the manual. Previously they used the forward position, but with two smaller bearings.

I'm going to leave mine as you see it, but then add the second bearings up front as well for extra precaution. Doesn't seem like it will hurt and I've found several others that have done the same.

Maybe Dave Dahl will chime in on the subject?

Hi Guys:
With respect to the bearing position...I believe Ronnie (in our club) used the forward position on his 600 and speacial ordered a wider bearing from Boca Bearing that was almost as wide as the belt. This would preclude the belt from rolling over the flanged lip during hard Pirouette maneuvers

But Dave D., please do chime in with how you and Kyle decided to arrange your retention

Yeah, it seems as the standard bearing is a bit on the narrow side. I think I am gonna add one more standard bearing or get a wider one as suggested.

I'm also looking for some guidance on setting proper tension on the tail belt? I really don't want to run too loose or too tight...

Hi guys,

The rearward position on the belt idler is the current correct position. The front hole was the originally design location, using smaller bearings. The rear position uses a single larger diameter bearing, and the bearing should just kiss the belt, or even be a hair above it. You can't adjust it, so it is what it is.

I have seen some guys run both, and it can't hurt, but Kyle and I use the rear only. We've yet to have a belt come off. If we had, we'd be doing something else, because...

With the amount of practice that goes into competitions, and the fact you've got one chance to get it right, we can't afford to use a system that has issues. That said, the single bearing was how Kyle's machines were equipped at the XFC, 3D masters, IRCHA One Competition and the Eurocup Championships. Kyle logged 2237 flights in 2010 using the one rear bearing, and never had a belt come off.

That said, you'll undoubtedly find somebody somewhere that will state on the forum that his belt came off, and the system needs modification. So it goes.

Belt tension? Hard to describe a "feel" with words. Best too tight rather than too loose. You really can't hurt yourself erring on the tight side, but there are problems to be had with too loose (like the belt coming off the pulley). Kyle runs his on the tight side with no ill effects.

Finally got around to finishing the build! It's ready for it's maiden, just got to mount the RX and antennas.

Just a bit nervous on the this maiden, seeing how it's my first FBL build.

I will have more build pics and info to come later. Here is a quick shot of the finished product.

And my final setup:

Yup. The front of the tail boom is grounded to the negative lead on the battery. The rear of the tail boom is grounded to the carbon fiber on the bolt holding the belt tensioner. I did mine the same style as Dave Dahl does for Kyle's helicopters.

Maiden is complete, flew like a dream! I was so impressed, then I landed and realized I had zero expo in the radio! =)

Leave it zero in the radio and adjust it in the V-Bar if you want. Either way works. Attaching different expos to flight modes (if you want to do that) goes with the radio. Bank switching can accomplish the same thing in the V-Bar, but probably easier to do it in the TX.

Thanks Dave, was hoping I could just do it in my 12Z. That is what I'm used to do in all my models, just forgot on this new build.

As for bank switching, not really wrapped my head around that yet, and honestly don't think I will care to use it. I don't experiment with different settings that much, small tweaks to get it good and set and forget it!

As Dave mentioned, if you prefer to use expo on your radio make sure to disable the expo in the vbar (which is on by default) or vice versa. Otherwise the tx and vbar expos will step on each other. It feels rather odd when that happens.

Length

What's the difference in overall length with the canopy on, between the 500SE and the 500?

Thanks for this tip!!! I had yet to click on the advanced tab for both cyclic and tail and never saw there was expo by default. The cyclic was set to 15% and the tail to 50%. I increased the cyclic to 30% were I normally like it and give that a shot.

Thanks Big Fil!

Overall

What's the overall length of a 500 and a 500SE? Anybody know the flying weight difference between a Trex 550 and a Mikado 500?

Bump

I have a 500SE on the way now, with a 4.0 Vbar.

I really like the idea of upgrading the Vbar to 5.X and using an SBUS receiver! My bird is coming with a 6008HS RX on it, with all the respective patch cords to the VBar brain. I will stick with that setup for now until time to do major maintenance. Then I will go the SBUS route.

There's also the chance I may try a GY750, but I don't know yet.

Anthony, any updates about your 500SE?

Erich

No updates. I actually stuck the tail into the ground a while back doing really low tic tocs. Due to the belt drive tail I was able to safely land the bird without more damage than the tail itself.

I was actually about to place a order for replacement parts today. The weather here in the PNW is finally getting into summer'ish and we can fly more.
