I'm running a new GV-1 with a 9252 servo, optical sensor and a YS .91. Sometimes when applying full collective, the throttle 'hunts' for the correct head speed - a fairly rapid increase/decrease in throttle. It's like the governor can't figure out what the head speed should be.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

1) Try a regular sensor....my optical used to do that in the sun hovering inverted.

2) Governor or servo may be going.

3) I just had the same problem and found a worn sprague (one-way) bearing. I imagine that would also play hell with the governor.

very often, that surging is because the
engine is somewhat too rich.

Bill,

Have you tuned that engine to run like a Swiss watch WITHOUT the governor being turned on? The earlier comment about the GV-1 getting upset over a too rich mixture is very true.

The other tips about looking for a slipping auto hub and using an OEM sensor are surely worth investigating.

My GV-1 was doing the same thing on an R50 hovering at 1600rpm. You could hear the hunting and watch the throttle arm moving.

Yesterday I had the fan/clutch assembly out tracing down a high frequency vibration. An adjustment to the clutch had everything running true. This morning there was no hunting evident. The clutch allingment was the ONLY thing I changed. SPOOKY. I've no idea why this should have made a difference. It does, however reinforce the advice about getting everything running sweet first, then use the govn. to make life easy.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll tweak on the mixture first and see what happens.

if the mixture doesn't help out, try changing the gear ratios. I once saw a Raptor do this that was running a 50 in a 30's body.

had a similar proble with the opt sensor setup , electronics were fine .

Narrowed problem to the fuel supply / carb.Tried setting needle , no joy , stripped carb , cleaned , no joy , traced fuel line found a tiny hole , repaced tube , all is well.

Another thing to look for is...

make sure your 5mm ball link screw on the throttle servo arm is tight and has not come out , this will also cause the engine run very inconsistence .

I had this happen on a rap 50 optical sensor, I installed the magnets
in addition to the silver strip on a black TT fan in case I decided to
use the mag pickup.
This caused a surge with the GV1 engaged.
The sensor read a signal from the shiny surface of the magnet in addition to the silver strip.
Painted the magnets black and all was well.
