Hey guys I just came in from flying and this time out did two sliding autos. It was really fun to try but as I guessed would happen the plastic struts that hold the skids took a beating from the runway pavement. At least half of the material has been sanded away. I knew it would happen just didnt know it would be that fast !! Anyone adding anything to lessen of stop wear on the struts ??

OR..

This won't wear out your skid either..

If you think its too fat.. go to your local home hardware store buy those bbq tank hose.. split them and wrap around your skid lenghtwise like the float that will protect your skids for sliding autos on pavement.

Pete,

I was wondering if in fact you just wanted to protect the skids as a whole or do you wish to continue doing the "sliding" autos.

Might I suggest the following;

#1: If you are just wanting to protect the skids from wearing further, use the rubber skids protectors sold almost at every R/C heli store like Rick's, Century, Gr8Lakes.....etc. These rubber protectors will keep your skids from looking like they've been shaved off. Your only problem is that if you attempt a sliding auto, the skids protectors will actually work as brakes and the heli will flip & tip over.

#2: If you are wanting to continue the sliding autos, I thought I actually saw a pic of some aluminum channels (like the small ones found on window sills) which were tied to the skids of a model heli. The channels were cut to the length of the skids and worked well for those running stops. You can say they were like miniature skis for R/C helis

Pete,
Drill a hole thru the skids where they go thru the strut hole and put a small bolt or screw in with the head part on the bottom of the skid. These will stop the wear AND allow those sliding autos.

good ideas

Thats why I keep comming to RR, lots of good info and ideas .
Thanks Ray and Payton, yea I'm gonna keep on doing sliding autos using these ideas !! They were fun to do, looked cool, and I thought they were easier to do than a no forward movement auto.

Just the other week, I was doing some sliding autos and got caught up in some grass. I couldn't lift off due to the skids snagging to the weeds.

That is something else you'll have to look out for.

weeds

Man weeds and grass can get ya!! I just set my heli down one time to get ready to fly and I guess it slid forward a little, I didnt know the skids got under a couple of bermuda grass runners and only found out when I threw a good bit of collective into it fast to launch quickly, Next thing I knew was the heli was rocking hard right and nose down as the grass tried to destroy my day, lucky me the grass runner broke and the heli jumped into the air. It all happened faster than I could say "UPS truck".
