I'm in the same boat then...

I assembled the tail and boom last night and the tail gear box is very notchy, similar to when a bearing has gone bad after a crash.

I did read on another forum that the gears are tight until flown and they will then 'bed in' but mine as soooooo tight I wouldn't want to fly it in the current state.

Anyone else had an issue?

I fixed mine by shaving of a little nylon from the back of the gear and putting a shim on other other end to compensate.

IMHO you should not have to do all that to make a potentially $2000 Heli work

If there is an actual tail gear meshing problem, Outrage should address it and issue a fix, period.

Come on guys, not even Align helis have issues like that. .

ualdrivr we all know that we should not have to do mods like this
BUT i would prefer to do a simple mod to get flying than sit on my backside and winge about it. I have built two 90s and bothe needed this mod
Hopfully Outrage will change the speck but meantime i will be flying

I just built two 90's and my gears were a little tight also. After the first flight they both wore in fine. I would actually rather have a slightly tight fit on my tail gears and have the wear in with zero backlash than have to shim them, have them wear in and shim them again. As long as you do not have the older rough looking gears in your kit you will be fine.

Align cant even drill a boom so the tail box isnt crooked. You have to dremel the slot to allow extra movement to get it straight. Shouldnt have to do that either or replace all the hardware and links due because the stock ones are junk and thats on a heli thats been out for years. Outrage will fix problem in a matter of weeks. There are ALWAYS problems with any new heli. The difference is how the company handles those problems. Align just wants you to buy upgrades from another company instead of fixing the problems they have. Remember the WONDERFUL quality of the trex 550?? You were there for that )

The prototype gears had a pin though the gear to secure it in place, and they were CnC gears (only the factory and test pilots received them months ago before they even went into production) the production gears are injection molded and are secured from both sides with cap screws.

Why is it that test pilots received parts on heli's that are not even in the kits that are sold, what is the logic to test a heli that has items not in the kits??

I was even told the main gear was CNC for the test pilots.

This hobby sucks, when your not flying.

I agree 100% with you Thomas, the difference is that almost everyone is expecting crap from Align. We, in the RC community, have come to expect higher standards of kit manufacturing by every other manufacturer, except Align and that's a fact.

If Outrage spend all that R&D time and money to create a world class 90 size Nitro with very well machined CNC parts, like that rotor head that I still drool every time I see it, then they should not have tail gear meshing problems.

But like you said they are addressing the issue and that's that.

Cheers..

I agree with you on the higher standards but there has yet to be a Heli that I know of that hasn't had some kind of issue when it first came out. Once things get mass produced you tend to run into these issues. As long as they identify and fix the problems it's all good. The tail gear mesh is an easy fix until the new gear set is available (if it's not already out)

Are you flying his weekend? I am hoping to get out Sunday at some point

Well that's pretty simple, its called PROTOTYPING, we all had the production gears in our machines at IRCHA, those are the ones that you received in your kit, the sponsored pilots had there prototype kits long before IRCHA and we all put the production gears in and flew them before IRCHA.

A question was asked, how can I tell if I got the right gears, that was what I responded to.

to answer your question about why that is done, cheaper to manufacturer CnC I would guess, then create the mold for the injection process once Charley makes the decision on the size etc.
