I have a Jazz ESC on a trex-450 that is acting funny...i think.

At spool up it takes a long time for the head speed to stabilize, and in flight it seems to vary a bit.

My questions are:
1) Is there a computer cable to program the ESC or do I have to use the stick method or programming card?
2) Is there some other options in heli mode that will make the gov work better?

Very simple to do, see Mr. Mels video...

That does help with one issue, but what about the advanced settings? Do I need the programmer card or is there a way to use a serial cable and a PC?

What video says is good enough. If your HS varies in flight, either your battery is weak for what you ask or your pinion is too low, causing throttle to be above 85%. (Well, 85% in Jazz is tricky - you need to calibrate Tx (refer to MrMel) and then recalculate 85%, taking into account calibrated values (around 83-86%) on ATV on throttle on DX7. If more explanations are required for this, please let me know.

I have Jazz on almost all helis. If proper pinion/battery/motor, HS is very good after being programmed on mode 4. If you change pinion/battery, reset Jazz to mode 1, then mode 4 and you are good to go. Spool up is a bit slow, but not that slow to worry about and tweak it.

No you do not need prog card really. That's one of the beauty of Jazz - simplicity of programming. Set mode 1, then mode 4 - that's it.

Edit: You can also adjust ATV on throttle for particular Jazz on Tx, but not really required. If you blindly set it to 85%, it will be good enough, if not, not a big deal. Still you use flat curve for Jazz, so throttle is just relative number, if having enough headroom for governor.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm using a 3-cell 2200mA pack with a JGF-450F motor. What would be a good pinion and head speed for 3Ding? I'm running 2850 on my other trex-450.

The best for you would be to use MrMel HS calc:
http://heli.dacsa.net/CalculatorV2/Default.aspx

It is pretty accurate. Target HS should be around 3100-3200 for Trex 450 like heli with 325mm blades with enough room for governor (~85% throttle from max (100%)). Battery discharge rate matters much. 20C discharge rate for 2200mAh may not be good enough for example for constant HS maintaining at this HS rate.

Thanks for the help. I was able to resolve the performance issues by changing from a 11-tooth pinion to a 13-tooth.

I think the problem was a combination of low head speed and insufficient headroom in the throttle setting for governor mode.

Now I'm liking the Jazz!
