You're the best Duanne. Thanks so much for your continued participation.

niyot: I have not fotgotten about your offer to help. As the weather continues to improve, we will be getting outdoors and start flying. Some scheduled events are in the near future so I will keep you posted. Your help will be graciously accepted!!

A project update will follow hopefully later today.

Walter Reed Update

The first helicopter has been completed! Sgt. Jared Lemon finished his Trex 500 last week but due to one of many scheduled surgeries, he missed the first flight which is shown on the attached photo. The flight occured yesterday. Flying the heli is Bill Kahl who has been a tremendous help to me and the guys we work with. Standing next to Bill is SSgt Ramsey Coggins who should have his Trex 500 finished by the end of this month. Since SSgt. Coggins has both arms, he is progressing with his build and with Real Flight much more rapidly than the others with upper amputations. Coggins is missing his left leg.

We have a shortage 6 cell Lipos. There will be two more Trex 500s coming "online" in the next several weeks and both need at least two cells apiece, one to run with and one backup. Any help with this would be tremendous!

We have a Trex 600 under construction and a Furion 6 which may be started soon so the project is well under way and the soldiers seem to be enjoying the process. Completing this first heli is a milestone for us all here at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

...I also would like to thank the Baird family of Gilbert, AZ for sending the past issues of "RC Heli" magazine. They are getting well used! Your kindness is appreciated.

Update

We finally got Real Flight loaded on Sgt. Lemons laptop. (don't ask why it took so long) His Trex 500 was the first completed in the class and can be seen being flown in my previous post by Bill Kahl, another Red Cross volunteer who has jumped in to help me out.

Since becoming a student in our class, Lemon has had to endure a couple of operations to the remainder of his right arm. Subsequently it has taken much longer to complete his heli then expected.

His flying skills are improving. It never ceases to amaze me what these guys can do with just one arm.

Watching Lemon fly on Real Flight, Bill and I determined that a harness tray to hold Lemon's DX7 would be very useful. In this picture we are attempting to mock up something for him. Any suggestions would be useful.

Scheduling has been a challenge across the board. These soldiers do have other responsibilities at Walter Reed but for the large part we are getting it done. The Trex 600 which can be seen on an upper shelf in the background is being built by Pfc David Oliver. He has been training for the Warrior Games currently under way at Fort Carson, CO. By the end of next week he should be back in on a regular basis.

The next heli to be finished is another Trex 500 being assembled by SSgt Ramsey Coggins (below). Coggins has a little bit of plank flying experience from the past and has really mastered helis on Real Flight. We are in the tune up stage of his build and hope to have in in the air next week.

We have a new student from the USMC starting next week. He will be building the Furion 6 which I have been gathering parts for over the past couple of months. I'm really looking forward to seeing this thing fly!

We are officially out of radios. Horizon donated four DX7s and we will have six kits in varying stages of completion. I emailed Horizon a couple of weeks ago about this but have not heard back. If any of you have some "pull" with them I would appreciate some help!

As you can see, the room we work in is somewhat of a mess. They have run out of room at Walter Reed in downtown DC. A new facility has been built on the grounds of Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. We will be moving there in August.

I've been following this thread a bit and I commend you and thank you for all you and the others have been doing for these incredible folks!

I wonder if maybe Curtis Youngblood or his father might be able to help with info on converting a remote to make it a bit easier for some of those guys? I know they both use a pretty unique setup on thier radios making them almost 1-handed.

Lastly, I may have missed it, but I remember something being mentioned about a possible PayPal that folks can donate to for this? Was that ever finished or was it shut-down?

Thanks again to you and everyone who has contributed as well as a HUGE thank you to all of those folks you're helping!

Believe me, this is our pleasure not to mention that the community came together in very large way to help launch this project.

The CY idea is a good one. He donated several sets of CF blades and is aware of what we're doing. I am hoping though that something simpler like a tray will at least help in the interim.

I spoke to The Red Cross about opening a project specific Paypal account but they were not interested. Their explanation is a good one and I'd rather not get into here. There is a fund at our LHS, Hobby Hangar in Chantilly, VA. What they did last year was accept donations and held raffles locally and gave us product at their cost. All of the other products were donated by manufacturers and online shops like Heliproz and Ron's Heliproz South. Other participants were Horizon, Hitec, Great Planes, FMA, Progressive RC, Ray's Helitech to name a few.

If you have interest in donating to the fund at Hobby Hangar, let me know. I should give them heads-up to expect donations from out of town. I will then post contact info for them. There is another shop, Oliver's Hobbies in Indiana that has been sending items for cost as well from local donations. In fact they started this thread!! Duane's sign-on is the very first one in this thread.

Thanks for the info. I had an educated guess that the PayPal was going to be "declined" so to speak and I'm sure thier reason is a good and valid one.

Next time I make an order with one of the folks on your list, I'll mention it and see if I can have them send ya'll something. It's the least I can do for those folks.

A tray might help a lot as well. I just saw a couple new posts about some of them on the market that looked like they might be good options.

Here are the links I pulled from that post.

One of the soldiers is in need of a transmitter tray, a few more monetary donations are needed. I will donate 1.00 for every 5.00 that gets donated. You can send in a money order or check to the addrss on the first page with "for Radio Tray" on the check so they know what its for, or you can send me the money through paypal and just foward the recipt email from where you pay to Henry so he can keep track of how much has been donated. I will foward a recipt from where I put in a dollar for every 5 you donate, to you.

Henry I also set up a Paypal account specifically for donations. rcdonations@live.com If you put money in just foward the recipt email you get to Henry so he can keep track of who has paid and how much, when he feels there is enough money for a purchase the group needs or they just need a few dollars for small items henry can let us know and we will get him a certified check or mo sent from our bank.

This Paypal idea has been mentioned several times and I think someone needed to actually set it up. Your donations can be 1.00 or whatever you feel you can afford, if every member of this forum put in 1.00 Henry's group probably wouldnt need to ask for donations anymore for awhile I know there will be several people screaming foul, how do they know the money will go where it is intended? I have excellent feedback here, Ebay, and I run my own business with perfect feedback there also. I am also a Veteran and I am still in the Indiana Guard. Talk to some of the guys I have done business with and ask them about me.

Henry, you got 20.00. So far only 1 person has donated for the TX tray. We thank him sincerely!

I also printed up a flyer and posted it at our Vet Center and will post one in our local armory next week. Any one wanting a copy of the flyer to post somewhere just send me a message and I will email it or put it in my gallery for you to print out.

Hey guys

Are y'all still needing a Tx. I have an RDS 8000 but no Rx. I'm sure someone could donate a Rx. Also, if you could, update us on what you are needing at this stage. Sounds like you have put together a great program. Thanks!
